The sheer size and scale of Sao Paolo is staggering, and can be a little intimidating. But accept the fact that it's impossible to scratch far beyond the surface of this colossal metropolis in a single visit, and simply enjoy one of the world's truly great cities on your own terms. Glittering skyscrapers stand proud alongside beautiful 16th century churches, while its thrillingly diverse dining scene is reflective of an amazingly multicultural population. Whatever your idea of a good time, you can bet that Sao Paolo has it in spades.

Things to see

Sao Paolo Cathedral is an absolute marvel. It's the city's largest church, and one of the largest neo-Gothic cathedrals in the world. The site's history dates back to the late 16th century, though the current building was completed in 1954. Be sure to check out the magnificent organ, one of the largest in Latin America. Ibirapuera Park is to Sao Paolo what Central Park is to Manhattan – an enormous green oasis in the bustling heart of the city, where locals come to exercise, socialize, and relax. The park also contains numerous iconic buildings by world-renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, such as the Cicillo Matarazzo Pavilion, home of the Museum of Modern Art and the University of Sao Paolo. Niemeyer is also responsible for the Anhembi Sambadrome, one of the city's largest open-air events venues. It's home to Sao Paolo's internationally famous samba schools, and also serves as the start and finish line for the annual Sao Paolo Indy 300 Indy Car Race.
