Vannes Hotels

With its brightly-coloured, timber-framed buildings and sturdy stone walls, Vannes looks more like the set of a period drama than a living, breathing town. Yet once you’re acquainted with its cobbled, narrow streets, you’ll discover that this place is very much alive. From summer festivals and open-air markets to a thriving café culture on the marina, Vannes knows exactly how to enjoy the best things in life, so all you have to do is sit back and soak up the atmosphere.

Things to see

With its spire rising above the slate rooftops of the old town, Vannes Cathedral is a prime example of soaring gothic splendour. Inside its vaulted ceilings and glorious stained-glass windows will leave you with a sense of hushed awe. Just a couple of streets away is the Place de la Republique, the heart of the city. Here, belle-époque facades flank the Hotel de Ville, Vannes’ stately town hall. In the warmer months, pavement cafes spill out into the square, and it makes the ideal spot to sip a coffee and people-watch. To the north, the architecture takes a decidedly modern turn, the highlight being the innovative Palais des Arts et des Congres. It has a packed schedule of visiting contemporary art exhibitions and experimental theatre performances. Visiting with kids? You won’t want to miss Vannes Aquarium, where you’ll come face-to-face with their mascot seahorses, as well as sharks, and even crocodiles.
