Exploring Lorne

Set along the banks of the River Erskine as it reaches the sea, the pretty seaside resort of Lorne lies off Loutit Bay in Victoria. It’s a favourite visitor destination for tourists driving the Great Ocean Road, with its 1,000 residents happy to host around 12,000 extra people over the length of the New Year festivities and almost twice that number during the autumn Falls festival in February. Highlights of the event include the Surf Boat Race and the Pier to Pub Swim.

Lorne is a charmingly typical Australian seaside resort, boasting a pier, souvenir shops, beachside pubs and eateries, and a lovely, two-mile long beach that is great for surfing, swimming, diving, and snorkelling. Fishing is a favourite occupation here, and locals can be seen trying their luck at the far end of the pier every evening. The year-round warm weather gives the town a Mediterranean feel, and its pretty Forest Park holds a BBQ area, walking trails, and forested nooks and crannies. As befits a seaside town, Lorne has a choice of comfortable hotels and guest houses.

Sights nearby

The main attractions here are the pretty town itself, its stunning beach, and the wild, unspoiled countryside just a short drive away. If you’re driving the Great Ocean Road, Lorne makes for the perfect short break, even in season when it gets busy. Hotels here include the Mantra Lorne and the Cumberland Lorne Resort.

Great Otway National Park
With its important bird area and diverse range of vegetation and landscapes, this national park is a peaceful getaway-from-it-all set just a short drive from Lorne. Rainforested Hills, refreshing Erskine Falls, and the Cumberland River are home to an amazing array of birdlife, koalas, and other indigenous wildlife, and the vegetation here has changed little over thousands of years, giving unique eco-systems and unspoiled natural beauty.

Cape Otway Lighthouse
At the far edge of the coastal region of Great Otway National Park is remote Cape Otway, towering over the wild ocean and home to the historic Cape Otway Lighthouse. Deserted Johanna Beach and Blanket Bay are overshadowed by the rocky cape, and the views from the lighthouse are magnificent.

Teddy’s Lookout
Set at the edge of town on the rugged cliff tops, Teddy’s Lookout gives spectacular views of the ocean, the Great Ocean Road, the charming small town, and its beach.

Great Ocean Road
One of the world’s great scenic drives, the Great Ocean Road forms Lorne’s main street for a short distance before heading towards the famous 12 Apostles offshore rock formations and some of the most exciting, twisting, switchback-style driving conditions found anywhere on earth. The road runs for 230 kilometres along the Surf Coast’s soaring cliffs and the aptly-named Shipwreck Coast west of Cape Otway, starting in Torquay and ending at Allansford.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

As a popular tourism resort, Lorne is well set up with cafés, pubs, and restaurants, with a good selection serving vegetarian dishes as well as modern Australian cuisine and international gastronomy including Greek, Italian, Asian, and Arab foods. Dishes here are made with the freshest, locally-grown ingredients and local seafood which is unloaded each morning and sold next to the harbor. Local cheeses, preserves, and wine are must-trys, and the fish and chips here are unbeatable. Craft shops and small art galleries, as well as a range of boutiques and other clothing stores, a supermarket, and a book store complete the picture.

Public transport

The only public transport options in and around Lorne are bus services running from Geelong to Apollo Bay and Warrnambool to Geelong, both of which make a stop at Lorne. Another bus route runs from Colac to Lorne itself. If you’re planning to stay in the town and tour around the area for a few days, hiring a car is your best option, although taxis are available and the town itself is small enough to get around on foot or by bicycle.
