Things to seeElba Island’s main attractions are its sandy beaches, which form a ribbon around the island. Cavoli Beach, in the south, is one of the largest and most popular. It has a fun, party atmosphere, with beach bars pumping out music and sun loungers so you can lie back and work on your tan. Biodola Beach is quieter and is ideal for families. It has a long stretch of soft sand and plenty of amenities, such as cafés, restaurants and beach shops. If you really want to escape the crowds, try Fetovaia Beach, which lies at the foot of soaring mountains. The sea here is crystal clear too; great for snorkelling and swimming. For a bit of culture to balance the sunbathing, head to the Roman Villa delle Grotte, the largest of the island’s villas. This ancient stone complex contains stunning mosaics and landscaped gardens which slope down towards the sea. Hotels in Elba IslandEvery hotel in Elba Island has a touch of Tuscan charm. There are both luxury and mid-range hotels available, and there are some excellent hotel deals in Elba Island, so you can find a bargain. Where to stayPortoferraio is the island’s capital, and boasts several historical and cultural sites, including numerous Roman Villas. It also has a good range of amenities, including local shops and restaurants, giving it a convivial atmosphere. It has a mix of luxury and mid-range hotels to choose from. Close by, Procchio is the largest beach resort on the island, so it’s perfect for a seaside holiday. It too has a wide selection of hotels, many with sea views and beach access. Cavoli, in the south, is well-suited to a young crowd, and has a few mid-range hotels at good value for money. How to get to Elba IslandElba Island has its own airport which receives flights from numerous European cities, making it very accessible. From the airport, car hire, airport shuttles and taxis are all available. Hiring a car is a good option if you plan to explore the island, while several hotels offer direct shuttle services. You can also reach Elba Island by ferry from the Italian mainland. Ferries depart from Piombino to Elba’s capital, Portoferraio, very regularly, and the crossing takes just 30 minutes. Florence’s Firenze Airport is the main one in the region; from there it takes just over 2 hours to reach Piombino.
