A budget-friendly holiday haven on Spain’s northwest coast, Lloret de Mar attracts families, couples and young revellers alike. Just 75 kilometres from bustling Barcelona, it provides all the trappings of a Spanish seaside holiday, with a little heritage and culture too. From blissing out on the sandy beaches and diving into water sports, to al fresco dining, golf and coastal strolls, by day it’s mostly about taking it easy. Come sunset however, the town’s energetic entertainment and thrilling nightlife will put that rejuvenation to good use.

Things to see

The most accessible slice of sun, sea and sand is Lloret de Mar Beach, which boasts 1.5 kilometres of golden sands in the centre of town. Alongside typical seaside R&R, the family-friendly stretch offers lots of water activities, including parasailing, jet skiing, pedalo and banana boating. If you’re not ready to get out of the water, make a splash at Water World. Alongside its pools and lagoons, the waterpark features slides and chutes for all ages, from short and quirky, to towering and terrifying. Beautifying the town centre with its ornate facade, the Parish Church of Sant Roma is as spectacular on the inside as it is out. Originally dating back to 1522, the church’s 20th century facelift saw the addition of Byzantine, Moorish, Renaissance and Modernist design elements. If you need a little respite, take a tranquil turn around the Santa Clotilde Gardens. Adorned with shady Mediterranean trees and plants, brightly coloured flowers, trickling fountains and pretty sculptures, the leafy haven provides serene ocean views.
