Corfu Hotels

While most of Greece’s islands have a stark, barren beauty, Corfu is quite the Garden of Eden. Reliable winter rains mean that it is filled with lush olive groves and green, rolling hills; a welcome retreat in the heat of a Grecian summer. Its beauty and fertility hasn’t gone unnoticed – since the ancient times, Corfu has been a centre of learning and civilisation, as well as demonstrating more recent French and Italian influences, giving the island a thoroughly cosmopolitan air.

Things to see

Corfu Town, the island’s main city, is a supremely elegant, refined place. You can get a taste of Italy in the Liston, the main square, built in Venetian style. Leading off along the main avenues, the architecture takes a French twist, with belle-époque buildings and boutique shops. In the old town, around the fortress, is where it is most Greek, with traditional shops on tiny streets selling local delicacies, such as fig cake and olive oil. Then it’s time to enjoy the beaches: Dassia Beach, north of Corfu Town, is one of the most popular, with miles of golden sand and a string of beach bars and restaurants. Glyfada Beach, on the west coast, is quieter and more rustic. One of the island’s most romantic spots is close to the village of Sidari: the Canal d’Amour is a channel created by 2 towering sandbars – utterly picturesque and laden with legend.
