"Great location, excellent customer service"
Lovely hotel, friendly and welcoming. Lovely decor and furnishings...rooms a little small and noisy. Fantastic locationGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Vikki, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Lovely hotel indeed, not to mention it is one of our historic buildings in SF, built in 1928! Please know that there are several types of rooms available at the Drake. I'm please to know that you enjoyed our customer service and hope you'll visit us soon. Regards, Jim Gross, General Manager
"Great location, great service, small rooms!"
The bed was very comfy, location of hotel was wonderful and the staff were generally very helpful. We had a bit of a wait on our bags being brought up by the door staff, but everyone else was always very helpful. The hotel offers free wine hour between 5-6pm every day, and if you opt to not have your room serviced each day you get a ten dollar voucher […] towards any of the bars/restaurants or in room dining bills. Only real down sides were the noise from the street and the size of the room, which was tiny! Could have done with having a fridge for the mini bar and some extra pillows available in room, but other than that - the room was spotless and we didn't have any trouble sleeping, the hotel is in a wonderfully central location and we had no trouble getting around San Fran! Nice hotel in great location! We walked from the BART station to hotel, only took 10 mins (up hill) Very nice decor throughout the hotel Room was on the small size but that's expected when in a city Cash machine in hotel is very handy and there is a shop across the road for water, chocolate, fruit, etc and Starbucks next to the hotel Close to union […] square where we got the "big bus" tour Would stay again! Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Ami, Thanks for staying with us! I believe we did a good job in preserving the "old-world" charm while going through renovation in 2011. The building was built in 1928 and is officially a historical building in SF. Adding to the beauty of this hotel, as you know, our location is wonderful; walking distance from BART station, Chinatown, Financial District, Union Square and other places can be reached by hopping on a Cable Car right outside of our front door. Yes, when you are travelling, the convenience counts, doesn't it? Please visit us soon.

"Beautiful Hotel Perfect Location comes with a COST"
Stayed two nights, a beautiful hotel located in the perfect location but this does mean its expensive. We decided to treat ourself for our first two nights on our West Coast flydrive tour of the USA. TIP: if you have hired a car Valet Parking is the only option at this hotel and it costs $54 per night (24hrs) so be warned. There are multiple parking […] garages close by which enable you to self park and are more reasonably priced at between $29-40 per 24hrs BUT if you are in a fly drive holiday like we were a car really isn't needed in San Francisco. Room was small but beautiful. TIP: Bottles of water on the table are not free as my wife discovered when she noticed the $6 sticker on the lid after drinking it, most places we stayed on our trip had free bottled water in the room which when you considered the price of the hotel you think it would be included. We did have room service which was nice, a touch expensive We stayed a further two nights in San Francisco at a hotel just around the corner which got us parking at $29, the rooms were bigger, cheaper because we just needed a base not a luxury hotel. The hotel found and are willing to send my husband's razor back to the UK, I think that probably describes the excellent service. Really good location next to Union Square. The reception area is lovely in which you can sit to while away time and have a drink. Hotel was clean, good sized room for city location.Genuine Expedia guest review
The hotel is excellently situated for all the sights and great for shopping however the street noise even on the 6 th floor was an issue . The constant deliveries to the shops throughout the night , departing nightclub customers and the trolleybus ( starting at 6 am) could be muffled with double glazing . The hotel staff and location do compensate for […] this and if like us you are worn out at the end of a long day sightseeing getting to sleep is ok it's just the being woken up too early that's a problem . Having said that I would still recommend the hotel just suggest asking for a room higher up not facing Powell st. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good hotel for location."
Super location to all amenities. Superb staff, who were very helpful and accommodating. Bathroom very small and a job to sit on the toilet and avoid the toilet paper holder hitting one's shoulder.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great hotel, perfect for shoppers."
Great hotel, well located for easy walking access to most of downtown area and perfectly located for shoppers. All the usual design touches you would expect from a kimpton hotel, they really know how to make the most of a building without going over the top. Front desk staff were incredibly personable and helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review
Beautiful hotel, great location right next to Union Square, great for shopping and food.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This hotel provides a refreshing change for the business traveller tired of staying in cloned hotel chains. Service was great, and it was nice to have some interesting features and history. Rooms small but very comfortable, though the noise form the streets starts early and ends late. Would definitely stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Fantastic Hotel - Awesome location"
I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough - we had an upgrade on check in to a better room on the 16th floor - what a view of the city! The location is right on union square, near the shops, its a bit of a walk (1.4 miles) to fisherman's wharf (or a cable car if you can brave the ridiculous queues) but Im not sure I would have wanted to stay up there […] anyway - good area for a visit, but not to stay in. You dont have to have your room cleaned and if you choose not to, you get a $10 voucher to be used in the bar or the restaurant - essentially giving you a cheap breakfast every day. The staff were always friendly, the bar staff would chat and tell stories, everything was fantastic. Some have said the hotel looks quirky - which is probably true, but it has a lot more character than the modern all white hotels. The only point to note is that there is a LOUD nightclub on the 21st floor, which we could hear from the 16th so I imagine it gets louder as you go up. No problem for us as we were out but if you are a family with children, it may be a little loud! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Well I'll definitely be back"
A nice centrally located hotel in walking distance from just about anywhere in the centre. The room was small but efficient (space well designed) and clean with plenty of plugs for the many gadgets one travels with these days. The wi-fi was the fastest I have ever experienced in a hotel and better still free for as many devices as required. I view this […] hotel as extremely good value and will make sure with the help of Expedia I use this hotel again for my next trip. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The staff were wonderful. Very friendly and helped with any queries we had. The hotel decor was gorgeous and nice and clean. Our room was very comfortable and clean and had a good view looking over union square. It was nice to watch all the hustle and bustle of the city and the people in the square. Very easy to get about the city from the hotel with […] a cable car stop being right outside the front doors! Would definitely consider staying here again. "Great location but beware"
There were 7 of us staying in 4 rooms for 3 nights as part of a longer vacation. Not our first visit to SF. Couldn't fault the location right in the centre of downtown. Most of staff friendly, particularly front desk & concierge who were very helpful. Bell boys very curt though. Our rooms on 6th floor were satisfactory. However, they were very noisy... […] from late night partying guests, guests making out next door (what stamina!) and garbage trucks/traffic from 6am. Also, there are no safes in these rooms. Watch out for scam in lobby bar. On four occasions, despite bringing it to the barperson's attention each time, they tried to charge us 33% more on a bottle of wine compared to the drinks menu price. Also, they try and charge a gratuity (I thought they were voluntary) of 20% on parties of 5 or more in the lobby bar. When challenged they said it was in the menu. It isn't. They then said that it's in the restaurant menu and, because you can order in the lobby bar, that's why you have to pay. I challenged them and got a reluctant refund. I don't mind tipping generously for exceptional service but this is just a rip off. If you don't need/want your room made up every day of your stay you can claim a $10 voucher, redeemable in the hotel bars/restaurant/nightclub. Thought this was a great idea. Got me $40 of free drinks! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Beautiful Hotel - uncomfortable mattress"
Visually stunning and very beautiful hotel. Unfortunately the beds are very hard and uncomfortable. We mentioned this to the hotel afterwards and they indicated that pillowtop mattresses are optional. My opinion, in a hotel like this, the mattresses should all be as comfortable as possible. Also, the Starlight Room has a great view, but the menu is […] pretty weak. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Historic, yes, Worth the cost, NO!"
Friendly staff and great location, but that's where it ends. The Historic Queen rooms are claustrophobic at best. I managed to get a handicapped room which wasn't much better. It took forever for hot water in the sink, and it was lukewarm once it came. Water pressure in the shower was horrendous. Had to call for fresh towels. Biggest reason I stayed […] here was for access to the Starlight Room. The website stated it was open to the public all 4 days I was supposed to be there. Well, 3 of the 4 days ot was closed for private events, and the last day when it was finally open, there was a $20 per person cover charge even if you stayed at the hotel. Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Hello Chris, I appreciate your feedback on your stay. Our Historic Queen is the smallest of the rooms we have at the Drake. I'm uncertain which room you were relocated to, but there are several types of rooms that are much bigger than the room you initially stayed. As for our Starlight Room closure, I appreciate your bringing this to my attention. Although, some of the private event booking in the Starlight Room may be last minute, my staff and I are trying to make our guests become aware of the potential Starlight Room closure (especially during our upcoming holiday season) in advance on our reservation web site. Our aim is to make your stay as pleasant as possible and hope you'll give us another try. Regards, Jim Gross, General Manager

"Close to all attractions"
The hotel room on the fifth floor was a bit smaller than what we expected. But that wasn't a major concern since we spent a great deal of our time exploring San Francisco. The overall hotel quality, the location and the hotel staff were all great. The hotel was literally right in the middle of Union Square and a short walk from Fisherman's Wharf. Where do I start. Our first night there was absolutely shocking. We got there and we were put into a room that was next to the elevators, small, and had no sun-exposure. Our toilet-roll holder was broken with the holder being placed on the sink - this was fixed easily once staff were contacted but how did house-keeping not notice or fix this prior to […] our arrival. The wifi was not functioning in the room (but functioning in the lobby): we had to speak to reception staff 3 times and all times they advised us to contact IT ourselves! We spent the first night with no wifi in our room. The next day, apparently IT were supposed to reset the system, but this did not fix the problem. The hotel staff were aware of similar problem with other guests and yet they made us contact IT ourselves. Eventually we spoke to a 4th reception staff who changed us to another room. This other room was much better, with functioning wifi, felt roomy and had plenty of sun-exposure. The only thing was the bathroom door did not shut properly. Be aware of the $55/day parking fee, however, you can park at a fraction of that amount off Stutter Street (next block over). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
