Where to Eat in Newport - Fresh Seafood and Waterfront dining at The Wharf

Find a place to stay

Whether you'd prefer to keep it casual for a night at the bar, or don your finest apparel for a fancier dinner, Newport has you covered. Chain restaurants are relatively rare in town, so you'll have the opportunity to explore many unique local flavors - especially the celebrated and fresh seafood - served up in interesting independent venues ranging from oyster bars to Ocean Avenue restaurants.

Typical dishes

Newport is the perfect place to get your fill of fresh seafood and other quintessential New England fare, such as chowder (New England-style, of course), fish, clam cakes, and oysters.

Thames Street

Thames Street is the main boulevard in Newport. It's home to many restaurants, including numerous New-England style bars and eateries featuring the ocean's very best bounty. The majority are laid back and casual, although you can find a few upscale restaurants which are perfect for special occasions. At the Midtown Oyster Bar, shellfish fans can enjoy its namesake dish either fried or in a stew. If neither of those float your boat, consider the caramelized sea scallops served with warmed greens.

Washington Square

After a day of sightseeing in this historic district, you'll be looking for somewhere to chow down. Luckily, there are many high-quality dining options in striking distance of the most popular tourist destinations. Most serve American fare, such as sandwiches, fish, and French fries, paired with a full menu of beers. Some offer outdoor seating, too. At Yesterday's Restaurant & Brew Pub, you can watch the bustling square as you enjoy a craft beer and an inventive dish, like seafood nachos, or one of the more traditional offerings such as quesadillas or buffalo wings.

Ocean Avenue

Ocean Avenue follows the edge of the Newport peninsula, running right along the water. The restaurants you'll find at the peninsula's end are considered to be the most upscale. The Safari Room serves lobster in creative ways, such as a pizza topping or mixed in mac and cheese. You can also order it the traditional way: coupled with butter and a bib. The Safari Room and the other Ocean Avenue restaurants offer views just as fine as their dining, since the ocean is just steps away.

The Wharfs

Just a block from Thames Street, the wharf offers plenty of options for waterfront dining. Unsurprisingly, many of these restaurants specialize in seafood, with outdoor seating so close to the sea, you can touch it. Both casual and upscale dining are available. Along with a large wine list, the Fluke Wine Bar offers a diversity of small plates - appetizer-sized portions of fish, meat, and vegetable dishes meant for sharing - as well as entree-sized dishes. Favorites include the Block Island fluke and the lobster avocado salad.
