Zakopane Hotels

The jagged peaks of the Tatra Mountains pierce Zakopane’s sky, and their snowcapped heights make the town a magnet for skiers and snowboarders, who want to take on nature’s extremes - and win. With rocky trails for hiking and mountain biking, and glassy lakes etched into the undulating landscape, Zakopane is an all-year, outdoor play area. Make no mistake, though, the charming wooden chalets that sit on the mountain’s slopes never look better than when they’re dusted with snow, and their windows are flickering with the flames of a roaring log fire in the depths of winter.

Things to see

Kotelnica Bialczanska’s wide boulevards of snow give you all the space you need to show off your skills, as you rocket down some of Poland’s best skiing terrain. The fun needn’t stop at night, as floodlights illuminate the powder, letting you ski below a ceiling full of shimmering stars. The mountain changes personality, as the sun melts away the last of its snow, and in the summertime, its slopes become perfect hiking territory. Climb through an ocean of fresh smelling fir trees, up to the top of Sarnia Skala. The climb up past bare rock formations, which jut out of the ground like a giant’s teeth, will be hard work - but feeling the cooling spray of a gorgeous waterfall on your face instantly makes it all worthwhile. Make a splash at Aqua Park Zakopane, where twisting slides will put your head in a spin, or where you can swim in sweeping outdoor pools, at the foot of the crumpled mountains. Leave the pool, and get a pampering in the thick steam of the attached saunas - which will soothe away any muscle aches, guaranteeing that you’ll be bouncing out of bed, ready to ski, when morning rolls around.

Hotels in Zakopane

Warm your feet by the fire, after returning to your choice of the many cosy hotels in Zakopane. Beautiful, chalet-style, options are decorated with pink and purple flowers, and inside you’ll find neat chocolate parcels, wrapped with a bow, waiting on your bed. Hot tubs smoulder in the gardens of 5-star spa resorts, where the smells of perfumed candles mingle in the air. Or, you can try wallet-friendly hotels, where you’ll enjoy free WiFi, comfy beds, and warm cups of steaming hot chocolate - all for a steal of a price.

Where to stay

If you detect a slightly pungent smell floating up the mountain towards your hotel, that’ll be the charming cheese market in Zakopane, which is packed with stalls selling hundreds of variations of the delicious local Oscypek sheep-milk cheese. The salty wheels are wood-smoked for as long as 2 weeks to give them their distinctive flavour. Zakopane’s hotels are incredibly welcoming, but if you want to explore a little more of the local area, you should consider one of Szczawnica’s options. You’ll be well placed to day-trip to Czorsztyn - where a moss-covered medieval castle peaks out from the forest, offering views down over the valley and the shimmering Lake Czorsztyn.

How to get to Zakopane

The simplest way to reach this remote winter wonderland, is to fly into Krakow International Airport. Once on the ground, drive across - or hop on the connecting bus - which will take around 2.5 hours to arrive. Busses leave on a regular basis, and considering the driving in Poland can be unnerving for foreign visitors, the simple bus connection represents by far the easiest way to reach Zakopane’s ski slopes.
