Top up your tan on the picture perfect sands of Krabi’s endless beaches, kayak the rugged shoreline on the hunt for secret caverns to explore, or brave the crowded streets of the hectic night markets, where your taste buds will be tantalized by the aroma of freshly roasted meats and sweet fruits – life on Thailand’s southwestern coastline is laid back, relaxing, and more than a little bit special.

The impossibly white stretch of sand that makes up Ao Phra Nang Beach is a secret gem on the Railay peninsula, and getting to it is only possible by traditional longtail boat. You’ll be glad you made the journey when you arrive on this idyllic shoreline, where snorkelers, scuba divers, and a few curious tourists find their way every day. A barbeque on the soft sand is the perfect way to spend an afternoon, while the towering cliffs that frame Ao Phra Nang Beach offer hiking trails, and plenty of photo opportunities to enjoy. Back in the main resort, Krabi Walking Street is a must-visit destination, but only if you venture out after dark. This innocuous roadway is one of Krabi’s most famous night markets, brightly lit by street lamps, and lanterns hanging from the many stalls. You can feed yourself as you wander the length of the bazaar, nibbling on deep fried pineapple, skewered spicy shrimp, and freshly made Thai fishcakes as you trail your way through pottery stalls, and rails of gaudy clothing. On the quiet shoreline of West Railay Beach, you can hop on board a ferry – little more than a longtail boat in many places – for a day spent adventuring on the island of Koh Phi Phi. For an exciting alternative, hire sea kayaks and enjoy an afternoon gliding through the crystal clear waters as you discover forgotten sea caves, and sheltered bays.

Hotels in Krabi

Tourism is big business in Krabi, and everyone is catered for here. Whether you’re a backpacker or scuba diver looking for some independent discount hotels, or heading to Thailand for a romantic stay in one of the luxury hotels in Krabi, the choice is certainly impressive. Spending a little more on your chosen accommodation certainly brings some benefits, like private beaches, personal swimming pools in your isolated villas, or spa treatments on site, but even if you’re traveling on a more modest budget, cheaper hotels still usually offer a great location, air conditioning, WiFi, and satellite television channels.

Where to stay

The resort of Ao Nang boasts the same idyllic scenery as many Thai tourist resorts, just without the neon-bright lights of a garish entertainment district. The emphasis here is on family and couples appeal, and aside from the occasional relaxed bar, and upscale restaurant, there are only a couple of nightclubs within walking distance of any hotel. Things are a little different over at Krabi Town, a lively and emerging social district, where clubs reverberate into the night with modern music, and tour operators compete against persistent hawkers as they comb the beach for business.

How to get to Krabi

Phuket International Airport sits on the other side of the bay, and it’s a two hour journey by road to reach Krabi. It is, unfortunately, the nearest international airport for overseas arrivals, but the journey does have benefits of its own, with spectacular scenery, and impressive seascapes to enjoy along its route. Some resorts on Krabi operate their own transfers, by sea as well as by land, which is a welcome option.
