Kathu Hotels

Nestled between Phuket Town and the shimmering waters of the Adaman Sea, the Kathu district is home to Phuket’s wildest coastal resorts. The main beach of Patong is a winding, golden strip of shoreline that straddles the entirety of Kathu’s western coast. With aquamarine seas, white sands, and a glut of beach bars and clubs, Patong is renowned for its wild party atmosphere. In addition to its shoreline, Kathu is also blessed with dense rainforest and striking natural scenery - providing a peaceful and quiet contrast to the hedonism of the coast.

Things to see

The expansive Patong Beach sits at the foot of luscious tropical rainforest, laden with coconut and palm trees. Here, you can while away the afternoon on a shaded sun lounger, watching as the waves crash gently on to the shore. If you’re after something more thrilling, then head to the nearby Patong Go-Kart Speedway. Spend the afternoon whizzing around the track at high-speed, trying your hardest to get a podium finish. After the exertions of the track, it is time to hit the nature trails and head into the rainforest. Grab a Tuk Tuk taxi and ask for the Kathu Waterfall, which is a short drive away from the beach. The waterfall is a 20 minute walk up a set of steps that are well worth the effort, as you can calmly reflect with the gently cascading water as your backing track amid the green of the rainforest.

Hotels in Kathu

From 5-star luxury to family resorts and a huge number of youth hostels, Kathu caters for travellers of every budget and need. Luxury hotels in Kathu dazzle with traditional Thai spas where you can indulge in a massage whilst overlooking the sparkling sea. There are also a range of family-friendly Kathu hotels that have complimentary WiFi, fragrant Thai food as well as bars and entertainment areas. With Phuket Island being a backpacker favourite, as well as a starting point for further travels across the east, there are budget hostels and hotels along the entire coast. Many are available with safe storage areas, a complimentary Thai breakfast, and chill out areas to meet fellow travellers.

Where to stay

Most of Kathu’s hotels sit adjacent to Patong Beach just off the Thanon Phangmeuang Road. Here you will be situated just a short walk from the sea and the gleaming coastline, as well as central to the array of busy bars and clubs. Once you wake up, the crash of the waves will be the first sound to greet you, before you open your windows and look out on to the endless blue of the water. If you want to escape the thronging coastal areas you can head a little further inland and either hire a bicycle or use the cheap Tuk Tuk taxis to get round to the attractions.

How to get to Kathu

Phuket International Airport is 35 kilometres north of Kathu and receives connecting flights from Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur as well as many European cities in the high season. From the airport you can either get a taxi, which can be quite expensive, or the airport’s shuttle bus to Phuket. From Phuket, there is a connecting bus service to Patong where most of Kathu’s hotels are situated.
