Crete Hotels

Although perhaps justifiably known for the array of glistening white beaches and glassy Turquoise Ocean, the island of Crete is home to much more than an exquisite beach holiday. Although you certainly won’t want to miss the beaches here, there’s also a vast amount of history and culture to be discovered. Ancient Roman Aqueducts, and even older native Minoan ruins pepper the countryside, while there’s plenty to see and do in the vibrant, balmy towns that hug the coastline.

Things to see

Visiting the soft, sandy beaches of the island is a must for any visitor. The subtle bronze of Agia Marina Beach is a popular spot with sunbathers and families, and lies close to the city of Chania, nestled in the curves of the sweeping horseshoe shaped bay. Nearby, you’ll find stunning views night or day among the pastel shaded Mediterranean style buildings whose reflections glitter and swirl in the waters of the Old Venetian Harbour. This area really comes to life in luminous shades of light in the evening. If you’re keen to explore more of the local history, then a trip to the crumbling but ever bold coloured remains of the Palace of Knossos is a must. Dating back to the Neolithic period, these ruins have a colourful history of their own, including being fought over in WWII.

Hotels in Crete

Hotels in Crete are both numerous and varied. You’ll find an eclectic mix of discount hotels and luxurious resorts scattered across the sun baked landscape. Most accommodation can be found in the main coastal cities such as Heraklion and Chania. Generally, you’ll find most hotels are equipped with a bar and restaurant, sparkling swimming pools, and even high speed internet access that is often free in public spaces. Thanks to the competition for business, you can often find some great Crete hotel deals as a pleasant added bonus, too.

Where to stay

Beach lovers may want to consider Chania for accommodation, especially if you’re looking to start soaking up the rays as soon as possible, as the city is not only close to one of the island’s airports, but also the warm and inviting sands of Agia Maria Beach. There’s plenty of accommodation choices here, too. Alternatively, if you’re interested in exploring the ruins of Knossos, while still having access to the beautiful beaches, Heraklion can be a great location. For couples, or those simply seeking a more secluded experience, then heading South to Matala, or Lentas, can be a good choice.

How to get to Crete

The island has 3 main airports, one at Chania, one near Heraklion, and finally one located at Sitia. There are frequent charter flights during the high season summer months from a number of European destinations, while outside of this popular period you can head to Athens Airport and then catch one of the numerous domestic flights to the island. Once on the island, renting a car is a common choice for visitors, and will enable you to get around easily, as there’s lots to see.
