Langkawi Hotels

Secluded coves of pure white sand, turquoise oceans peppered with emerald islands, and thronging stretches of healthy green forestry greet you as you descend from the heights of Langkawi’s Gunung Machinchang Mountain, aboard Langkawi Cable Car. While the suspended journey is a stunning way to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of this Malaysian island, don’t worry if you don’t have a head for heights. Alternative amazing experiences are always waiting - and whether it’s seeing the graceful explosions of tumbling water at Seven Wells waterfalls, or scuba diving among thralls of abundant fish life in the sea, there are countless ways to get acquainted with the beauty of Langkawi.

Things to see

Acclimatize to your new home from home by lounging in the shade of a swaying palm tree on Langkawi Beach – where rippling waves stretch to meet the horizon, and a sweeping expanse of sugar-white sand is framed by dramatic, green cliffs. The ocean waters hover at bath temperature, making it difficult to find the motivation to move but, if you can drag yourself away, hire a boat and explore the small islands off the coast of Pantai Tengah, or visit Underwater World. Here, you’ll see rainbow colored fish swirling, and penguins torpedoing though water above your head, as you wander through a transparent tunnel. The hubbub of haggling and good natured bargaining fills the air at the night market, where you can meet the locals, and learn a little of Langkawi life. Stalls pop up from nowhere to fill the streets, and you’ll watch as seafood crackles over open fires, before you get your chance to sample authentic roti canai bread, with sweet banana filling. To dig a little deeper into the island's culture, visit Mahsuri's Tomb. Legend has it that jealous islanders sentenced a beautiful young woman to death for adultery, only for white blood to leak from her body - signifying her innocence. Mahsuri used her dying breath to curse the islanders to 7 generations of bad luck.

Hotels in Langkawi

Celebrate your arrival at one of the luxury hotels in Langkawi by uncorking the bottle of iced champagne waiting in your room, before heading down to dine by candlelight, as piano keys tinkle. Thriftier options are available and, although you may have to sacrifice the tender foot massages, and rose petal baths, you'll still enjoy outdoor swimming pools, internet access, and adequately-sized rooms.

Where to stay

Beautiful hotels gravitate to Langkawi’s coastline, and Cenang Beach is a particularly nice area to stay. Here, you can enjoy walks along the sparsely populated shore - watching as the sun sets behind yachts milling in the water, silhouetting islands like Pulau Epor as it goes. Kuah is the most developed part of the island and, if you’re looking for a slice of culture along with the beach sessions, staying here will put you right into the thick of things - close to landmarks like the onion-topped towers of Al-Hana Mosque.

How to get to Langkawi

The cheapest way to reach Langkawi – and the most romantic – is to sail slowly across the sea from Malaysia or Thailand by ferry. Boats from Thailand's Satun - and Malaysia's Kuala Kedah, Kuala Perlis and Penang - set sail for Langkawi Ferry Terminal on a regular basis. There’s also a small airport on the island, where connecting flights from hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur occasionally land. Hiring a car from the airport is the best way to get around, unless you’re feeling fit and would rather hire a bike and cycle.
