Rennes, the capital of the region of Brittany in northern France, sits on the confluence of the rivers Ille and Vilaine. This vibrant university city of Rennes, with 700,000 residents, has been called the ‘most liveable city in France’. A city of art and history, Rennes has Celtic roots and France’s second fastest growing population after Toulouse. Find accommodation in Rennes and wander around the old town’s medieval streets and see the lovely architecture: the Parliament building, Opera House, cathedral and Saint-Georges Palace are striking. Visit the Musée des Beaux Arts on the Vilaine river to see pieces by Picasso and Gauguin and an excellent Egyptian and Greek art collection. Find a place to stay near the Musée de Bretagne in the Champs Libres building, where there is also a science centre, library and planetarium. For modern art, head to contemporary art museum FRAC Bretagne. Relax in the beautiful Thabor Gardens where you’ll find an orangerie, aviary, rose garden and botanical garden.
