Lombok Hotels

Just east of the backpacker haven of Bali lies Lombok, a quieter, more laidback island with a tropical climate. From the long golden beaches to the small hidden bays, there’s plenty to discover, and you’ll often see scuba divers and fishing enthusiasts enjoying the clear blue waters. The rolling green hills and rugged mountains are also ideal for hiking and exploring, with plenty of space to go off the beaten track.

Kuta Beach has long, flat sands where you’ll often see people sunbathing or splashing in the shallow, clear waters. There are several luxury resorts lining the seafront, and you’ll find plenty of lively clubs opening once the sun goes down. Sekotong Beach is surrounded by coconut groves and has a quieter, more laidback feel. The surrounding area has smaller resorts and fewer tourists, so it’s perfect for those looking for a quiet vacation. Beloam Beach is in a secluded bay set in rolling green hills, and along the beachfront you’ll find wooden huts and eco-friendly resorts where you can enjoy true seclusion. Bangsal Harbor also has a rugged and natural shoreline, and its clear waters are ideal for scuba diving. You can also enjoy a horseback ride along the windy shores, taking in the rolling mountain scenery across the bay. For a truly dramatic sight, head to Pantai Pink which is a beach where the sands appear to be bright pink, and it’s during sunset when you’ll get the best views of this unique stretch of shoreline.

Hotels in Lombok

There are plenty of hotels in Lombok from cheap guesthouses to luxury villas, so you can find a place to suit your budget. Along the most beautiful stretches of beach you’ll often find upmarket 4 to 5 star resorts with features such as cabanas, sun loungers, outdoor pools, tennis courts, and health clubs. Guestrooms often have balconies or patios, as well as amenities such as air-conditioning, complimentary WiFi, LCD televisions, deep soaking bathtubs, designer toiletries, and bathrobes. If you’re on a tight budget, then look for homestay accommodation or guesthouses away from the major resorts, and for a modest price you’ll enjoy clean, comfortable rooms with extras such as minibars, coffee makers, and televisions with DVD players.

Where to stay

The Gili Islands are a series of small, tropical islands off the coast of Lombok, and these resorts used to be popular with backpackers. Nowadays you’re more likely to see luxury resorts and families on vacation, although they still have a bohemian vibe with beachfront bars and surf shops. The Senggigi Beach area includes Mangsit which is a popular strip of hotels and resorts, set along white sandy beaches and the clear ocean. Outside of the major hotels it’s a small and quiet resort, with a few bars and restaurants, and lots of green areas with tropical flowers. Mataram is a lively city with streets lined with tempting food stalls, and you’ll also find one of the island’s biggest malls as well as dozens of boutiques in the area.

How to get to Lombok

Lombok International Airport is based on the south of the island, with flights arriving from Singapore, Australia, and the capital of Jakarta. From the airport there are public bus services running to Mataram and Senggigi, as well as private shuttles to the major resorts, with most transfers taking under 90 minutes. There are also taxis waiting outside which run on a meter, or you can pick up a rental car if you really want to be able to explore the island.
