Rapallo Hotels

The glorious Italian Riviera is a magnet for the rich and the famous, and beautiful Rapallo offers all of the sun and style you'd expect, without any of the pretension. Stunning, storied abbeys hide in forested hills above the city, while sun-wrinkled friends toss boules into the air in the picturesque squares that lie below. While you’re here, you can take advantage of Rapallo’s waters for diving, trails for hiking and cafés for cappuccinoing. Or, you could use the town as a base for visiting the magnificent Cinque Terre - a chain of 5 pastel-coloured villages that perch on scenic cliffs along the soaring Italian coastline.

Things to see

Conquer a fear of heights, and take in a stupefying panoramic view of Rapallo and Portofino, by swinging up on the cable car to Santuario di Montallegro. Watch tiny yachts bobbing on the rippling blue sea below, as you dangle over a dark green valley and rise to an elegant church, which offers tranquil sanctuary above the city. Legend says the church was built after the Virgin Mary appeared on the hill in 1557, and gifted a portrait to a local peasant. Return to the narrow streets below, and walk in the shade of more pretty churches, while listening out for the melodic bell peals that mark each passing hour. The Basilica dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio is one of the most beautiful and historic in the town - dating back to the 6th century - and you can soak up the atmosphere while sharing a coffee below its peach and apricot-coloured clock tower. Afterwards, sit in the shade of the palm trees that rim the Vittorio Veneto promenade, or listen to waves lapping against the walls, as you walk up to the art-filled Rapallo Castle, dripping ice cream in hand.

Afterwards, take to your hotel’s flowery courtyard for an evening drink, surrounded by lemon trees and flowering vines. Grand marble bathrooms, supple mattresses, and giant flat-screen televisions await in your room, helping you to settle in and feel at home in no time. Even the cheapest hotels in Rapallo promise a sound night’s sleep and a filling breakfast - complete with chocolate-dusted cappuccinos and buttery croissants.

Where to stay

If you’re here during July, then be sure to stay in Rapallo itself, as the town feasts and celebrates the anniversary of the Virgin Mary's appearance. Crowds line the street for atmospheric processions up the painfully steep inclines to the monastery, before the festivities culminate in a jaw-dropping firework and pyrotechnics display, which sees the city’s castle bathed in golden light and fire. Those with deep pockets may choose to stay closer to Portofino, to rub shoulders with the stars in the St. Tropez of the Italian Riviera. Sip fragrant grappa spirits, before settling to eat the juiciest prawns you’ve ever tasted in the town's artisan restaurants.
