Where to stay

Along Karon Beach the promenade is mostly taken up by hotels, with beachfront bars and cabanas spilling out onto the sand. Take a short walk inland and you'll reach Karon Village, which has a few main roads running through it, with mopeds and tuk-tuks zipping past. Along these busy roads you'll find souvenir shops selling colourful beach inflatables and bars with open fronts which are part of the lively nightlife. Karon Temple Market is held on Tuesday and Friday, with dozens of stalls sitting under the gilded arches selling spicy satay, street food and handmade souvenirs.

Things to see

In a small bay, Kata Noi Beach is a quieter alternative to many of the area's beaches and a popular spot for surfers. Its golden sands are surrounded by a rocky cove for an isolated feel, and there's an inviting bright blue sea that's popular for snorkelling. Just south of the beach is Karon Viewpoint, which is recommended in many Karon reviews. There's just a short walk up the trail and you're rewarded with a clear sight along the coastline, allowing you to enjoy a panoramic view across the miles of sandy beaches. Wat Suwan Khiri Khet is a grand temple just a short walk from Karon Beach. You'll spot it in the distance from its gilded arches and large dragon statues, and it's a classic example of a Buddhist temple. Monks in orange robes can be spotted tending the grounds and inside it's a serene escape from the busy streets.
