Ostseebad Sellin Hotels

With its strikingly white chalk cliffs which beguiled the great Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, the island of Rügen has long been a sought-after holiday destination in Germany. One of its finest resorts is Ostseebad Sellin, which commands sweeping views across the sea-sprawl of the Baltic. You'll see classic examples of Resort Architecture, the impeccable and decorous white buildings still conjuring up all the romance of the aristocratic continental holidays of the 19th and early 20th centuries. And then of course there's the beach, which is the equal of anything you'll see in the southern part of the continent.

Things to see

Sellin Pier is literally one of the brightest attractions of the area. At night, its illuminations cast colours across the beach, and by day its ornate sign beckons you out to walk above the waves of the Baltic Sea. Meanwhile, back on land you have to take a walk along Wilhelmstrasse, where you can take in the gleaming white mansions with their ornate balconies and verandas. You can browse in the boutiques here, or indulge yourself in bars and restaurants, before carrying on to the promenade that overlooks the beach. Speaking of the seafront, you can feast your eyes on it all from one of the wicker chairs on the sand. A pleasing contrast to the epic horizon of the Baltic is Sellin's more modestly proportioned lake – the wooded landscape around it is perfect for hiking or cycling through. On top of all that, there's also a slightly unusual attraction in the form of an Amber Museum, where the exhibits resemble frozen fire. Many contain insects trapped for eons in the amber.

Hotels in Ostseebad Sellin

While it's certainly tempting to go for a dip in the sea, sometimes you just want to have a serene swim in an indoor pool. Hotels in Ostseebad Sellin can offer this along with saunas, steam rooms and fitness centres. Or you can simple relax in a hotel bar, admiring views of the coast from the large windows that let in the sunlight that attracted painters to the island in the past. If you need to keep up with emails, or just want to upload your holiday snaps, it's good to know hotels tend to offer WiFi access as well.

Where to stay

Perhaps surprisingly for such a classic seaside resort, there's only a limited selection of hotels in Ostseebad Sellin itself. That said, there are some fine ones located in pride of place right on the seafront, meaning you get spectacular views from guestroom windows. There is also accommodation available amid the icing-like white mansions of Wilhelmstrasse. Alternatively, you can choose from a number of hotels located a little way south on the coast in Baabe, where there's plenty of sandy beach to bask on.

How to get to Ostseebad Sellin

It may be on an island, but getting to Ostseebad Sellin is rather straightforward. There are 2 main crossings, together referred to as the Strelasund Crossing, which connect the island of Rügen with the mainland. It means you can drive to Ostseebad Sellin from elsewhere in the country. Flights from a few destinations arrive at Luebeck Airport, although the vast majority of visitors from outside Germany will likely arrive at Hamburg Airport instead. Once you're actually on the island, the most enjoyable way to get around is on the "Rushing Roland" – an old-fashioned steam train that connects various resorts and has been running since 1895.
