Bad Doberan Hotels

Just on the cusp of the epic waters of the Baltic Sea, Bad Doberan is one of the oldest and most elegant seaside resorts in the whole of Europe. Once the summer playground of German Emperors and other members of the continental aristocracy, it still has that refined and luxurious feel today. The brilliant white architecture harkens back to that golden era of tourism. It's also has its delightfully eccentric side, hosting Zappanale – a long-standing annual festival in honour of the avant-garde rock icon Frank Zappa.

Things to see

Visiting Bad Doberan, you'll be able to experience the sparkling beauty of Heiligendamm – the beach quarter which is sometimes referred to as the White Pearl. You'll soon see why, as the area is lined with the founding examples of Resort Architecture. Handsome white mansions with ornate balconies, verandas and gables line the seafront and exude the glamour of an aristocratic past. Of course, the beach is the main draw here, and you'll happily spend much of your holiday on its sands. That said, Bad Doberan itself has its charms. These include Doberan Minster, a striking example of Brick Gothic architecture. Be sure to look inside, because the red brick arches are unlike anything you'll see in traditional Gothic churches. To really delve into the history of the region, and see more great architecture, head to the Town and Resort Museum which is based in the old residence of a master architect of the 19th century.

Hotels in Bad Doberan

As you might expect from a grand old resort area like this, there are some rather luxurious hotels in Bad Doberan. One is a tourist attraction in its own right: the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm is comprised of brilliant white Resort Architecture buildings that have stood here for hundreds of years. That's not to say that you have to blow your whole budget on accommodation to have a fantastic holiday in Bad Doberan. There are also cost-effective pads to choose from, many of which come with all the mod-cons you could want.

Where to stay

A number of hotels in Bad Doberan are clustered in the town itself, which is perfect if you're keen to see the quaint old landmarks such as Doberan Minster. Of course, there is also accommodation on the waterfront in Heiligendamm, including the iconic Grand Hotel Heiligendamm. An alternative hotspot for beach lovers is Kühlungsborn, which is a little bit westwards on the coastline and boasts fine sands and an idyllic promenade and marina. Bad Doberan is also within driving distance of Rostock, a maritime city with charms of its own.

How to get to Bad Doberan

A convenient gateway to the region is Rostock-Laage Airport, although there is only a limited selection of flights that land here. If you're coming from outside Germany, you'll more likely fly into Hamburg or Berlin and then make your way to Bad Doberan on the road or by rail. Once you're in the region, you have to go for a ride or 2 on the Molli, a steam engine service that connects Bad Doberan with the beach areas. The surreal site of the train coming right through an ordinary Bad Doberan street, like the grandest tram in the world, will stay in your memory long afterwards.
