Shrouded in gloriously thick powder, Saalbach-Hinterglemm’s spiderweb of exhilarating ski slopes let you soar across crisp waves of snow, or pioneer your own exciting off-piste adventures. Summer transforms ‘The Valley of Games’ into an outdoor arena that begs to be hiked, biked and climbed, and whether you prefer battling raging torrents, or hiking through wildflower sprinkled meadows, you’ll be spoilt for choice here. The lively Après Ski scene shakes the snow with music from early afternoon to early morning, making Saalbach-Hinterglemm an unbeatable place to ski, sing and be sociable.Things to see
Wrap up warm, and feel the crisp winter air on your cheeks, as you pick up some speed at Saalbach-Hinterglemm Ski Resort. With schools to help even the shakiest skiers find their feet, and devilish black-rated descents - where split second decisions are all that stand between you and a face full of snow - the Glenn Valley caters to all. Don’t think the fun ends when the sun burns off the last of the powder. Serious skiers don’t let the summer beat them, and the whoops of joy never stop at the high altitude skiing area that lies 3,000 metres up, at the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. Ski in the morning, before heading back to your hotel to top up your tan around the pool in the afternoon. Try hiking with a twist, by following the geocaching trail that stretches along the Saalach River’s banks. Pack a picnic, and get competitive as you trek through vibrant vistas of waving grass meeting crystal blue lakes. The aim of the game is to use GPS to find hidden capsules, which are scattered across the gorgeous scenery. Hotels in
Tell stories around the fire, in a private wood cabin, where you’ll wake to the soothing sounds of trickling streams, and the gentle whisper of the wind. If that sounds a little too close to nature, try a ski in/ski out apartment instead, to enjoy unbeatable access to the runs and ski lifts. Don’t think you’ll have to compromise on your nutrient rich mud massages, or sublime hot tub soaks - indulgent spas are waiting to soothe every pore. Living in a blissful mountain bubble will quickly help you to forget the stresses of home, but the WiFi, free international telephone calls, and satellite televisions that many hotels in Saalbach-Hinterglemm can offer will keep you connected with the wider world.Where to stay
If your legs are asking for more, stay near the Unterschwarzach Cable Car - which has heated seats - to be whipped up the mountain for some surreal skiing on glowing, flood-lit slopes. Central Saalbach-Hinterglemm, meanwhile, lights up with Après Ski bars at night, and you can party on the snow, chink glasses with new friends in cosy bars, or grab a partner and dance to traditional Austrian Oompah bands. Staying in Hinterglemm or Leogang guarantees a quieter night’s sleep, and gives you chance to visit a mighty larch-wood walkway, which towers above the snow-smothered landscape. How to get to Saalbach-Hinterglemm
