One of the largest ski resorts in the French Pyrenees, Saint-Lary sits within the awe inspiring Aure Valley just 20 minutes from Spain. A quaint mountain village packed with modern offerings, December through to early April forms the family-friendly ski season. The fun doesn’t end there though. A year-round destination, the summer scenery offers hiking, mountain biking, rock-climbing and more. Close by to the Pyrenees National Park and the Néouvielle Nature Reserve, it’s an especially well situated base for exploring the unspoilt grandeur of the Hautes-Pyrenees region too.

With over 100 kilometres of slopes spread over 700 scenic hectares, Saint-Lary-Soulan Ski Resort promises some seriously good skiing. The Saint-Lary 1700 area, also known as Pla d’Adet, is best suited to families and features a snow kindergarten for the kids, as well as the ‘Kidpark’ snowpark. More experienced skiers will appreciate Saint-Lary 1900, with its challenging centrepiece run the ‘Mirabelle’, and Saint-Lary 2400 with its snowpark. The Sensoria Wellness Centre is the place to unwind. Set within a tranquil landscaped park, the modern complex utilizes the valley’s spring waters which are naturally imbued with sulphur and sodium. The centre offers a range of hydrotherapy and pelotherapy treatments, as well as the opportunity to bliss out in the pools, jacuzzi or sauna. An easy drive out of town, the Néouvielle Nature Reserve offers a real treat for walkers and nature lovers. With its dramatic granite strewn landscape and shimmering lakes, it’s home to some unique flora and fauna.

Where to stay

Saint-Lary is divided into 3 areas: Saint-Lary Village, the main hub, and Saint-Lary 1700 and Saint-Lary 1900 – which are situated right on the slopes. If you’re here purely to ski then the latter 2 offer the most suitable accommodation options, whilst a hotel in Saint-Lary Village makes the most sense for those seeking activity and R&R in equal measure. A traditional Pyrenean village with a warm atmosphere, it’s home to an large choice of restaurants, quaint shops, cafes, bars and a nightclub – with no shortage of ski rental stores either. When you’re ready to don your skis, the slopes are just an 8 minute ski-lift ride from the village.

How to get to Saint-Lary

Saint-Lary’s nearest gateways are Toulouse-Blagnac Airport and Pau Pyrénées Airport, situated 150 kilometres and 100 kilometres away respectively. Pau Pyrénées serves French destinations, including Paris, Lyon and Marseille, whilst Toulouse-Blagnac serves many major cities throughout Europe. Once you’ve landed it’s a less than 2 hour journey from either airport, which you can make by private shuttle or a rental car. The village is also reachable via public transport. You can catch a train to the station in Tarbes or Lannemezan, before hopping on a SNCF bus the rest of the way to Saint-Lary.
