Filey Introduction

With a long stretch of sandy coast on one side and the Yorkshire countryside on the other, Filey has an abundance of natural beauty. A small, traditional seaside town, Filey is at the start of a long coastal path along the heritage coast, overlooking the choppy waters of the North Sea.

Filey hotels are mostly 3-star, with lots of B&Bs and guesthouses that offer a comfortable stay. These homely properties are usually just a short walk from the beach and have comfortable rooms that are ideal for families. With free WiFi and a free breakfast included in many Filey hotel rates, these cosy hotels offer excellent value for money. Guestrooms have extras such as premium bedding, seating areas and large showerheads, so you can enjoy a home away from home.

Where to stay

Filey has a compact town centre, with a few shopping streets full of shops selling antiques, paintings by local artists and souvenirs. This leads down to the promenade which is lined by grand Georgian houses, with neatly kept parkland overlooking the sea. There's a long, narrow stretch of golden sand, and as you follow it along you'll reach a small harbour with tiny fishing boats and huts selling freshly-caught seafood. With noisy amusements, cafes and ice cream stands, there's an old-fashioned seaside feel to the town. There's also an outdoor paddling pool filled with sea water so kids can enjoy a safe paddle.

Things to see

Filey Beach stretches for 5 miles, from the town's promenade through to Flamborough. As you wander down the promenade the beach becomes quieter and eventually you find yourself in RSPB protected lands, where rare birds nest among the tall sand dunes. Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park is recommended in many Filey reviews, and is a great family day out. A trail takes you around neatly kept gardens full of colourful flowers, and you'll come across exotic birds and butterflies, and friendly farm animals which eat out of your hand. There's a wild pond where you'll spot dragonflies and waterlilies, and the willow tunnel where you can walk through a dense archway of trees. You can learn more about the area at Filey Museum, which is housed in an old fisherman's cottage. With exhibits showing how the fishermen used to live, as well as artefacts from the town's fishing industry, it's a charming little museum where you can step back into the past.
