Lyme Regis Hotels

Lyme Regis is a small and cosy coastal town set on the southern edge of Dorset’s unblemished field-swept countryside. Nicknamed the Pearl of Dorset, Lyme Regis boasts a stretch of fine-sanded beach which leads onto an expansive rocky shore that hides hundreds of huge Jurassic fossils - some set permanently in enormous stones, some mingled with the shingle - which makes for a perfect family-friendly adventure. The town itself also hosts warm fire-lit pubs and taste-bud tantalising seafood restaurants.

Things to see

As soon as you arrive in Lyme Regis, you’ll want to race down to the shoreline. Follow the golden sandy beach as it curves gently toward the Jurassic coast - where the rejuvenating salty sea breeze blows through your hair. Walk beside the Blue Lias cliffs - a majestic limestone and shale geological formation - and the Blue Lias rock, where dozens of spiralling ammonites set in the stone make for an unforgettable sight. After, walk back to the town, searching the shingle as you go - you may even find your own pre-historic ammonite to take home with you. Visit the Cobb, Lyme Regis’ towering white-stoned harbour wall, which dates back to Medieval times. The thrilling marine aquarium which sits atop the Cobb provides and entertaining and educational visit for the whole family. In the evening, wander up the hilly high street, where pink and yellow buildings house traditional taverns.

Several central hotels offer 4-star luxury, with queen size rooms, epic en-suites and in-house bars at surprisingly affordable prices. A handful of well established 2 and 3-star central hotels - that have provided stellar service for decades - offer cosy rooms with unbeatable views across the white-capped ocean waters. Where to stay

Central Lyme Regis is ideal for those who want to be immersed in the town’s local charm and unique culture, where the narrow winding streets echo with the sound of neighbourly chatter, and gently slope down to the infinitely fossil-flecked beach. For a more isolated holiday immersed in Dorset’s idyllic greenery, stay in nearby eastern Charmouth, a small coastal village set in deep luxuriant expanses of shimmering woods. For sun-seekers searching for an urban resort town with electrifying nightlife and an enormous golden beachfront, stay in the nearby city of Weymouth, where Lyme Regis is a short coastal drive away.

How to get to Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis’ unblemished natural surroundings make it slightly tricky to get to, but once you arrive the pristine beachfront and quiet cobbled streets will all be worth it. By car, follow the speedy M5 motorway south and peel off at A358, where a series of winding countryside A-roads will race you down to the town outskirts. The nearest railway station is Axminster, which offers regular and reliable services to London and Exeter. From Axminster, bus services will smoothly drive you to the town. Lyme Regis’ small size means that it is best explored on foot.
