Gran Teatre del Liceu is a grand opera house and public concert hall on La Rambla in Barcelona that was established in 1847. Originally a convent building and a survivor of multiple disasters, the opera house has transformed over the years to serve its goals of conserving traditional and international music as well as hosting extensive, elegant performances.

Gran Teatre del Liceu continues to expand its repertoire. Famous singers who have performed at the opera house include Elvira de Hidalgo, Kirsten Flagstad, Boris Christoff, Joan Sutherland, Mirella Freni, Jose Carreras, Simon Estes, Josep Bros, Natalie Dessay and Nina Stemme.

What are the highlights of Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona?

The Circulo del Liceo is a private society within the Gran Teatre del Liceu building and features exclusive full lounges, conference rooms, a library, a restaurant and additional services. As the longest-standing group to continue meeting at its initial location, the club currently has around a thousand members with largely art-nouveau and Wagnerism preferences.

Outstanding artists featured at the club include Alexandre de Riquer, Santiago Rusinol and Francesc Miralles. Among its masterpieces are marquetry, paintings, etchings, engravings, enamels and sculptures. A set of 12 oils on fabric is the most prominently featured in the club’s rotunda, inspired by musical topics.

What else is good to know about Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona?

Gran Teatre del Liceu is beside the Liceu metro station. The theatre lacks a royal box because its funding came from individual shareholders rather than the monarchy at the time of its construction. The opera house underwent many structural and modern changes for general improvement, but the parts that survived were unchanged.

As one of the world’s largest opera houses, Gran Teatre del Liceu’s 5-tier auditorium offers seating for almost 2,300 people. Nearby attractions to the house include Mercat de La Boqueria, the Museum of History in Barcelona, the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Aquarium of Barcelona.
