The great restaurants in Chaweng listed below make up a dining scene that’s on par with the popularity of this northeastern Koh Samui resort town. There’s an eclectic choice of venues serving cuisines from all around the world and at prices ranging from – according to European standards – ridiculously cheap, all the way up to extravagant. There’s enough choice to satisfy the pickiest customer.

Use this guide to point you to where to eat in Chaweng and what to try. You’ll find places renowned for the quality of their food, décor, atmosphere, service and prices. Some of the restaurants featured below might not deliver all of these attributes, but they share at least a will to offer their customers a memorable experience.

Tree Tops Sky Dining & Bar

    A unique, treehouse, fine-dining experience

Tree Tops Sky Dining & Bar at Anantara Lawana in north Chaweng is one of Samui’s most accomplished restaurants. It’s a top choice to head to if you are looking for a fine-dining experience. With only 8 tables in the restaurant and each table an individual “treehouse”, the experience here is unique.

It’s worth mentioning that you won’t stand much of a chance to dine here without a reservation because of its popularity and the limited number of tables. The earlier you reserve, the wider the choice of tables. Tree Tops’ menu is well adequate and offers choices of red meats (with a clever choice of steak knives), seafood and Thai cuisine – all up to international standards. You can also try the set menus, which come with optional wine pairings.

    Jungle Club

    Hilltop dining with exceptional views

Jungle Club is a hillside restaurant with access that may be hair-raising (especially the last few metres) but it’s worth it for some of the best views on the island. The northerly views from Jungle Club are of Lamai, Chaweng, Bang Rak and the airport and, at midday on a sunny day, are quite simply unbeatable. Jungle Club’s restaurant is built out of completely natural products, has bamboo sofas with colourful cushions and several different types of chair and table arrangements.

The multilevel restaurant has several dining spaces, and you can choose from a wooden deck with Thai cushions to individual thatch-and-bamboo salas to the actual restaurant area itself with its jazzy and spacey music and smiling staff. Its menu items carry French influences. There are baguettes, salads, steak and chips and a selection of wines form the backbone of the menu and if you fancy going Thai then there is a selection of curries and other dishes to choose from.

    Olivio Italian Cuisine

Olivio Italian Cuisine boasts what is quite possibly the most romantic dining venue in Chaweng. Benefiting hugely from its location in the grounds of Baan Haad Ngam Boutique Resort at the northern end of the beach, the restaurant looks out across the bay to the bright lights of Chaweng in the distance. It's also very peaceful – especially if the tide is in and lapping on the sand a few feet from your table. The ambience is more than ably matched by modern Italian cuisine.

Garden dining is complemented by an adjacent infinity pool and luxuriant grass underfoot. Lattice woodwork supports lush bougainvillaea and what was once a coconut grove is a compact, tastefully appointed and colourful little slice of Italy. The antipasti dishes are varied and rich featuring pan-seared tuna, smoked salmon, sweet focaccia and soft shell crab while main dishes such as beautifully rich lasagna, leg of lamb and a snow fish filet underscore the traditional elements in Olivio's refreshingly modern Italian cuisine.

    Red Snapper

    Mediterranean-influenced dining in Chaweng

Red Snapper is a red-themed Chaweng restaurant that has red seat covers and napkins and red bird of paradise flowers. It thinks big in terms of hiring international chefs and has a wide-ranging and innovative menu. Its modern décor includes abstract art on the walls, a live music lounge and bar, and an outside terrace hemmed in by teakwood railway sleepers with plenty of plants to keep things green.

Essentially a Mediterranean-influenced restaurant, you can enjoy dishes such as roasted duck breast with red wine sauce and polenta, roasted snow fish fillet in chorizo oil, a whole range of healthy salads and dessert treats such as poached pear Belle Helene. You’ll find live jazz here every night except Sundays and a sophisticated atmosphere that is very unlike the more laid-back, average Samui dining choice.

    Poppies Restaurant

Poppies Restaurant is a respected eatery serving Thai and international cuisine towards the southern end of Chaweng Beach. Part of the Poppies Restaurant and Cottages complex, it's situated right by the beach, making it one of the most romantic and atmospheric restaurants in town, if not in the whole of Koh Samui.

To get to the restaurant itself, you first have to walk through the picturesque gardens of the resort’s bungalows. By night, in particular, the subdued lighting makes the well-manicured greenery feel like a walk through a forest path crossed by babbling streams. The restaurant itself has a very traditional Thai look, with tables under palm thatch roofs, out in the open, by the beach and in a particularly smart wood-walled structure.

Location: 28/1 Moo 3, Chaweng, Bophut, Surat Thani 84320, Thailand

    Duomo Ristorante

A top spot for Italian cuisine in Chaweng

Duomo Ristorante, named after Milan’s cathedral, is located in central Chaweng down a small soi that leads to several guesthouses. With typically Italian, white tablecloths and sparkling-clean wine glasses, the restaurant wouldn’t look out of place in downtown Milan. The venue is cosy, the atmosphere relaxed and family-friendly, and the owner ensures that all things go smoothly. The staff members have a good level of spoken English.

Duomo is a favourite among Italian expatriates in Chaweng and it has high ratings, largely because its menu (Italian and English language) is dotted with regional peculiarities. The quality of the dishes served here – whether it be pasta, pizza, or else – is high.

    La Taverna

La Taverna is 2 restaurants in one, secreted away on a back street near Chaweng’s Soi Mango. With a large air-conditioned, traditional interior dining room and a corridor-like outside space lit by an electric-blue neon arrangement, the 2 areas couldn’t be more different. Some less-than-generous souls would call the outside area of La Taverna downright dark, and the fact that the wait staff all wear black doesn’t exactly help those leaning towards the myopic.

Still, there is just enough light to read the menu by, revealing La Taverna’s choices of classical Italian dishes in the old school manner. Pizzas here are notably large and top-heavy with rich additions while grilled lamb chops imported from Australia come with mashed potatoes and zucchini to add an Italian afterthought. The house wine comes in a generous portion when served by the glass.

Location: 168/18 Moo 2, Chaweng, Bophut, Koh Samui, Surat Thani 84320, Thailand

Open: Daily from 12.30 pm to 11 pm

    Chaweng Walk

Chaweng Walk complements Chaweng’s shopping/dining/nightlife scene on a large empty plot linking Chaweng Beach Road to the beach located between Banana Fan Sea Samui and Tradewinds by Lawana. This daily market is in the same vein as Chaweng Walking Street (their rather similar names can be slightly confusing).

One side of Chaweng Walk is open-air while the other is covered with a corrugated iron roof – the open-air area has a paved trail flanked by something like 30 stalls selling an eclectic choice of beachwear, handcrafted souvenirs, spa oils, cheap jewellery, and souvenirs, while the covered area features a food court (tables and chairs) with a dozen stalls selling Thai snacks and street food from chicken satay to grilled sausages and squid. Live Thai music is performed on a small stage set towards the beach. Chaweng Walk is Thainess at its best as it offers a good way to mingle with locals in a friendly atmosphere and to sample local delicacies at rock-bottom prices.
