So much for a final night's treat!
We had already booked a good room, but our son upgraded us to a large suite, which was great. But the following made our stay most disappointing: - the reception area was noisy; we had to queue; and the whole area seemed chaotic - we had to ask for the complimentary water, and coffee/tea facilities - there was no fridge in the room to keep the water chilled. The staff put a temporary one in for me - I never did get the mini-bar open (probably just as well!) - I was charged for Wi-Fi access at 16.95 US$ for 24 hours, until I complained - The room was next to the external aircon units, so it was noisy at night - we were woken up by workmen on the roof directly outside our window - the restaurant was no more than a bar, and was noisy and cramped. Hardly in keeping with the style of the hotel - the flashing light on the phone for message notification didn't actually deliver a message, but asked you to ring the front desk. Absolutely useless! - the other four hotels where we stayed in the US and Canada were all far superior to the Essex in all of the above criticisms. The Essex needs someone in charge to get to grips with some basics. We won't be staying there ever again.

Great location for sight seeing and restaurants. Central Park is on your doorstep and fantastic for getting away from the traffic and general noise that is New York. One negative if staying at EH is having to pay for wi-fi.

Short to meet the JW Marriott high standards
We arrived Saturday at 14:30 and the room was not ready until 15:45, although the check-in time is supposed to be at 15:00. We rushed to get to our first appointment and when we came back, the additional bed we requested at check-in was not there, and it did not arrived until the next morning and after three or four phone calls to the front desk. Next Monday they did not make the room until we came back and after a couple of phone calls. We had breakfast twice, one lunch and one evening drinks at the restaurant, the waiters were distracted, looking other way and expecting at least the 18% of "gratuity" almost imposed. During the 9 days of our stay, we struggled to get a reasonable level of service, but very short from the JW Marriott high standards of service I am used to from this particular chain. The most common answer from the staff was "sorry" and the second one was "what do want me to do?" It seemed like we the guests were "disturbing" the staff while they were trying to do their "jobs". I would not like to spend the several thousands of dollars again in a hotel where the service does not meet the standards of JW Marriott hotels in many other cities around the world.
