Eastside Lodge
The location was fairly central, just outside of downtown Porland. This was was advantageous in terms of travel, as there were several buses available that would take you downtown, and if that did not appeal you could always walk as it only took about 10 minutes. But if you do walk in, you might be surprised by the number of homeless people who line the streets in the Old Town district, which is the closest district once you cross the Burnisde Bridge. The condition of the hotel was perfunctory, as there was an elevator and an ice machine available. In the office there were two vending machines, one for snacks and another for drinks, as well as free coffee near the desk. The room itself featured an ice bucket and several plastic cups. Fresh soap was supplied daily, as the rooms were cleaned at around noon each day. The staff was always friendly and helpful.

1960s fixtures but clean and comfortable.
Although we felt that we had stepped back in time with the tiny bathroom and shower stall, the room was clean, comfortable, convenient to where we wanted to be, and the staff friendly. Pack your blow dryer, but the room had a safe. Good value.

Great location/staff
I chose this city location-- therefore ESL--to easily access downtown Portland, yet the bus system (Tri-Met) also is convenient from there to various other trending neighborhods on the east side [of the Willamette River]. Geography aside, the best part(s) of my stay was finding that the lodge suited my short-term expectations enough to stay a 2nd evening, until my flight out Saturday afternoon. To top it off, the friendly manager (or "president"?) gave me a very fair deal for that 2nd, after Hotels.com showed the lodge had no vacancy for that busy holiday-weekend Friday night..same room. The maintenance staff respectfully just brought me a few replenishments, my saving them time [from changing the bedding] which was simply my way of letting them focus more on rooms in need-- ie changing of guests. Overall, courteous, listening staff. :-) The only small blemish was the bathroom door that didn't close completely, therefore lock. Otherwise, quiet, relaxing, pleasant stay both nights, undisturbed..even though the streets were busy with traffic and nightlife on one side. Thanks, ESL!
