Very good
On day one, Check-in was slow. On day two, I got locked out of room for late checkout 3 pm because a key needed reprogramming. I took elevator to the lobby thinking it would take a minute to correct. Instead I waited 15 minutes at front desk. There was no line, only one other person being served, four clerks, two of whom saw me standing there and ignored me and just walked away, then of the the remaining two clerks, one ignored me and in turn walked away, leaving one clerk — dealing with one customer— remaining. Nor did she make eye contact with me despite my standing there (alone) for nearly 15 minutes. This last remaining clerk was the fourth clerk who paid no attention as she was more interested in her paperwork than in acknowledging me (a paying customer). Finally she reluctantly listened to my issue as I had to interject asking for help and automatically presented my room key and ID —but thus clerk had to ask a supervisor how to reprogram the key: actually she had to issue a new key. By now it was well after 3 pm checkout. I returned to my room to collect my belongings. The house phone rang. An indignant voice “from the hotel” asked if I was checking out. I said of course but was delayed (she hung up before I could explain I was locked out at 2:50 pm and, then, significantly delayed even more by the hotel’s utterly intransigent front desk staff.

Exceptional
Excellent Hotel in Time Square
This was the second time I stayed at this hotel and both times the room was excellent, and the staff was exceptional. This time (Nov. 27,2017) I was only staying one night but again the staff were more than helpful and went out of their way to help me. I arrived around 11:00am and wanted to know if I could book in, however I was told that I wouldn't be able to do this until around 3:30 to 4:00pm. Although the room was only for myself and my sister, I was travelling with my other sister and her two children who were flying out of New York at 6:00pm. This sister was very, very sick and she had to leave the hotel that she was in by 11:00am. She asked if she could stay just until 1:00pm to give her a little time to lay down and try to get over her sickness, but unfortunately they would not permit her to do so. I explained to the hotel clerk that I was looking to book in early because I wanted by sister to be able to lay down at least until her flight time. Again, your staff was most helpful and saw that I was given my room immediately. My sister was able to lay down until 3:30pm when she had to leave for her flight. Unfortunately, she was sick all the way home on the plane. But, I really want to thank you for allowing me to take my booked room early. It meant so much.

Fair
Only stay here if you can't afford anything else.
Maybe it's because we booked through Hotels.com, but we had the jankiest room. The staff was adequate, but nothing special. The room smelled musty or moldy when we walked in. No where to charge our cell phones close to the bed. The curtains don't close, the sheers did but were caked in orange and pink makeup or paint or something. The shades didn't stay down, so I'm sure people saw us naked. The bathroom was so tiny there wasn't any room to change. The furnishings, carpet and window dressings were straight out of the 80's. You can't control the thermostat and the heat was blasting, so even with both windows wide open all night, it was still hot and there was no fan. It's February and I was sweating with a t-shirt on and no sheets. The blanket was a 5 dollar Wal-Mart special. The water in the shower ranged from mildly warm to freezing cold. The towels were tiny and felt like sandpaper. No fridge or microwave and they make you pay 12 bucks for wifi. There was paint all over the carpet in the hallways and they leave cleaning equipment out, which makes it difficult to maneuver through the hall with luggage. I've stayed at Days Inns and Red Roof Inns that are nicer. This is a terrible place.

Great location, comfortable room, HOWEVER.....
Location: Couldnt fault... on 7th Ave between Times Square and Central Park. Close to subway links to lower manhattan and even JFK airport. Short walk to shops on 5th Ave and Rockerfeller Centre Room: comfortable bed, basic but fine bathroom. No kettle but I seen that from the other reviews before booking so I brought a travel one. HOWEVER... Reception is a joke! Queued for an hour and a half to check in. Small-ish reception area was packed with guests and suitcases and it was just chaos to be honest. Not a lot of places to sit down which made for an uncomfortable wait. There was only 3 members of staff checking guests in... I would have thought for a hotel of this size and clearly very busy they could have had 3x the staff checking guests in! Unfriendly staff!! I had seen reviews about the staff being unfriendly before booking but I thought it wouldn't bother me. But after waiting for a hour and a half to check-in and not even so much as an apology about the wait... I was certainly starting to see the unfriendlyness in action. As well as this there was no "welcome" just "what's the name" told us where to sign and handed us the key card Other occasions when I asked for another key card I got asked "what do I want two for?" Which was not unfriendly but simply rude. I also went down and asked for milk... and the lady gave me a dirty look and said "we don't have milk... just go to a coffee shop"... again just rude! Be prepared to be spoken to like you're a piece of dirt!!
