I got a room upgrade but, I had to pay an additional 36 pounds extra a night. We did receive a piece of cake for our wedding anniversary. The staff was very polite. The doormen were outstanding. The manager not so much. You do not “school” your employees in front of the clientele. Also, most importantly, you do not tell a patron that they are not working the elevator correctly. Then realize they that it is malfunctioning and do not promptly apologize. Rude.

Incredible hotel and location
We stayed at the Rubens at the Palace for 2 weeks (14 nights) from the end of June to early July for our honeymoon and couldn't have been happier with our stay. The hotel itself is really nice, clean, and comfortable, with an old-fashioned style decor. Staff was incredibly friendly and helpful with every interaction, and truly gave the impression that they wanted our stay at the hotel to be perfect. Our room was great as well! We booked a "classic double" room, which was a lot more spacious than I anticipated, especially staying in London. Queen size bed was really comfortable, and always clean. Bathroom was really nice, spacious, and always clean, with plenty of towels provided. They also allow you to set the temperature in your room to your liking which is always great. The location for this hotel could not have been more perfect - right next door to Buckingham, near great cafes and restaurants, and around the corner from a shopping center and a small grocery store. It's a really quick walk to Victoria station and bus stops, and it's also only about 15 minute walk down Birdcage Walk to get to the Thames River and Big Ben. It's also really close to St. James's Park near Buckingham which is a great place to spend time! Also at the hotel, they serve afternoon tea that is incredible!! This hotel became our home away from home for 2 weeks, and we cannot praise it enough. We absolutely will be back to stay at the Rubens!!

Wonderful staff, fabulous lobby and dining areas. Rooms have not aged as well. Yes, there is a chandelier and fabric lined walls, but it has become a bit shabby. What little space there is in the room is taken up with useless furniture. No fan in the bathroom and caulking rather messy. Be prepared to live out of your suitcase. There are no dressers and very little closet space. The AC, however, is great. Had a superb tea, great food and the service is quite remarkable. Having stayed there several times in the past, I was prepared to be overwhelmed again. I was not.

Exceptional 10.0
I have made quite a few business trips to London. I had the pleasure of staying at several of London’s best known high end hotels. Yet, here I am rating Rubens at the Palace above the excellent hotels (e.g. Savoy, Browns among them). What distinguishes Rubens from the best known high end hotels? The staff. This includes everyone; the concierge staff, the staff in their New York Bar, the staff in the Grill, the staff at the front desk, the housekeeping staff and the staff who man the front door. In addition to recommending restaurants, the concierge staff helped us interact with our airline who had lost a bag on our flight from JFK to Heathrow. They tempered our optimism at the “lies” we were hearing from the airline with years of experience. The staff in the New York Bar learned our names almost immediately and talked to us about our “bag problem”. The staff in the Grill assured us that we would not feel out of place despite my wearing the clothes I had flown in. The Front Desk people and the front door people similarly knew our names and would greet us by same when we were in the lobby or leaving/entering the hotel. A power outage in our room was swiftly rectified by calling housekeeping. At Rubens the front desk staff would say hello even when we were just walking to the front door to go for a walk. The front door door staff would inquire about where we were going and on our return would ask how our day day went. In short, it was like having friends rather than staff.

Good older hotel with just the best staff
Across from Buckingham palace it has a great location. Checkin was longer and slower than we like. Rooms are older, bathroom update was very nice and had great sleep both nights. The staff here is the property's greatest asset. Alex and Aaron on the door is the start followed by Bogdan on the concierge desk are friendly and extremely helpful. Other people from the front desk and service personnel for breakfast all impressed. We started with a lower assessment of the hotel but left overly impressed. One elevator being down for maintenance leaving one phone booth sized elevator for everyone and baggage delivery was less than ideal. We were on fourth floor and did the old stairs more than we anticipated.
