Good but choose the right room!
Very convenient for my business trip. Receptionist very helpful at check in. I had to change rooms because of noise caused by a damaged manhole cover in the main road nearby and the receptionist said that they had told the council about it but the council had not repaired it very well. My second room was at the rear of the hotel and very quiet with a nice view of the Queen Elizabeth setting sail. Room was clean and staff very pleasant. I booked dinner in the hotel but cancelled when I went to look at the menu and the young male waiter was incredibly unenthusiastic and would only say 'Fish and Chips is off' on the day I visited. Why is fish and chips off in a hotel right by the sea? His attitude put us off so much that I cancelled my reservation and went to the Marco Pierre White restaurant in the Grand Harbour Hotel opposite. – not cheap but really excellent food although its decor was rather gloomy with patchy service. The Holiday Inn staff the next day were all very helpful and jolly so maybe the miserable young waiter had the day off. All-in-all, a very pleasant place to stay and convenient for the area.

Poor 2.0
Overpriced, poky rooms, slow service and poor food. We attended a wedding there and stayed over.. our room was small but adequate if overpriced. The hotel was extremely busy but reception had only 2 members of staff in and it took ages to check and even longer to check out. The food at the wedding was lukewarm, the orders mixed up and certainly at our table there was 15 minutes between some getting their main and others, meaning no one ate at the same time. Drink prices were extortionate. £11 for a glass of (nasty) red wine and half a pint of lime and soda. There appeared to be only 2 very small, slow lifts which could only fit 4 people plus luggage in at a time so every time we wanted to pop up to our room entailed a 10 minute queue. Breakfast was adequate.. a buffet with a decent selection and the staff there were polite and helpful, however whilst awaiting checkout (another 15 minutes of queuing) I overheard one of the reception staff being really very rude and condescending to an elderly American couple who were querying their bill. I will not go back.. there are much nicer hotels in the area which don’t charge London prices for what is essentially an ugly office block on the side of a dock. Yes, convenient if you’re embarking on a cruise but I can’t think of any other reason to stay there.

Exceptional 10.0
Comfortable in Southampton
We really enjoyed our stay st the Holiday Inn Southampton. Mellisa at the front desk although training was very pleasant snd helpful. S was Dominic from the front desk staff. The delight of the stay was Ruth from the dining room staff. She was there to greet my wife and I with a big smile each morning and was very kind in seeing that our needs were met. She endured that she had things set for us early on the morning of our departure. She is a gem and I hope the hotel is aware of this. Overall great stay despite being there during the time of the “beast from the East”. We missed a couple of days at the spa facilities. We truly enjoyed the pool and bringing our granddaughter for her first swim at one year old.

Mixed Feelings
so sorry to write this as I had a choice of the grand harbour opposite which has many more facilities and where i would stay another time. Holiday Inn in throes of refurb and looked unloved externally on arrival; there were builders drilling close by my room til just after 5 p.m.which overlooked a huge docks car park - I arrived around 3 30 p.m. only a casual tex mex type restaurant. the room was clean with open type hanging area, no wardrobe. I asked for a double but was given a twin. tea tray good .i ate in my room but had to pay at the bar downstairs as I hadn't left my card details at reception since I paid for room in advance, which negated it a bit. no issue with the burger and cheesecake. I'm sure its good for some people, but its not my kind of hotel sadly. Prefer a little more old style comfort in lobby areas and a nice restaurant. Breakfast was good though and staff were very nice.

Good 6.0
We were disappointed to find that the Holiday Inn Herbert Walker Avenue Southampton was undergoing a refurbishment. Staff were very apologetic though. The evening meal was not to our choice and seems to be orientated towards a younger generation. On the plus side the breakfast was excellent as was the ambience of the dining room at that time. Disappointed to find that we were not given a double bed as requested. This, we were told, was the type of booking we had and also due to shortage of rooms due to refurbishment. All praise to all staff as they were most courteous and friendly. As it was an extremely cold due to adverse weather conditions the room/bed was cold but on request we were given an electric heater and another duvet.
