Five Luxurious Days in Washington D.C.
My wife and I were celebrating our 40th Wedding Anniversary. It happened to coincide with the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. We flew into Reagan International Airport on a Wednesday afternoon. We transported ourselves to The Mayflower Hotel. I had previous experience with The Mayflower 40 years earlier, as a young man, when I used to ride with my father into work when he would drive to his office at 17th & L Street. He used to take me to "The Grill" at the Mayflower Hotel because of its close proximity to his work. On many occasions I would see J. Edgar Hoover (the "G" Man, himself) dining at lunch at his favorite table. The Grill has now been transformed into a top-notch eatery called EDGAR, named after you know who! The food and drinks are outstanding, and you don't need to leave to The Mayflower to have a memorable dinner. The Mayflower has not lost any of its charm, or gracious manners as a hotel that had made staying in Washington D.C. a "treat" since the 1920's. Its location is in the heart of the business district, and the finest restaurants in the city. Our room, bed and bath, were huge, clean and comfortable. The furniture and bedding were all first class. The lobby is grand, and the Bell Captain, and Concierge, were always helpful and knowledgeable about all of the finest places to tour and experience while we were there in our Nation's Capital. When you talk about great hotels, you need to include The Mayflower of Washington D.C.

Great Hotel bad service!!
We got to the Mayflower on Friday night and I found out that I reserved it from Saturday to Monday! well the check in lady was very kind in finding us a nice room (458) within the rate that we paid for the other 2 nights but we would have to change the keys on the next day. That was the highlight of our stay !! Great room without any view from the windows but that was OK. By this night we went to the restaurant- bar and the service was too slow and kind of off the customer service standards for a hotel like yours. Second day starts and we went to the lobby to change our keys. My wife made a comment about the view and the front desk lady offer to change our room to one with better view. We got room 1052 , on the same side of the building with NO VIEW as well!! Besides that the room size and bathroom was half of the previous room! We went down and mention that and the check in lady offered us to go back to the previous room but by that time we were late for an appt and left it like that ( Couldn't she go an extra mile and offer a bell boy to pick up our luggage and put it back to our old room?). We came back and were craving a cup of coffee that was cold and we were told that it would take 45 minutes to have a new and hot one. By the same night I bought a bottle of wine and called 3 times for a bottle opener until I gave up and got down to the lobby to have somebody opened for me!! Next day same thing with the coffee in the afternoon, and with the bar!!

Well located for tourists-poor attention to detail
Nice hotel, friendly staff. The suite was roomy. Unfortunately it looked out to the roof tops and an unsightly alley. The restaurant is pretty good. Evening service staff was much friendlier and efficient than lunch service. The issues we had were 1) temp control in the room - a room that is apparently controlled automatically to 68-70 degrees with no way to adjust it downward. I called the front desk 4 times and got 4 different responses from surprise I couldn't adjust it, to "I'll send up maintenance" ( who never arrived) to maintenance controls it remotely and wil give you access to adjust it" (they didn't adjust our room ) to "Oh sorry". We baked at night. 2) Also, they do not provide complimentary internet. What hotel still charges these days? So unnecessary. 3) No water available in room apart from the tap which was not that tasty, 4) sheets forgotten and left in our room and not taken away 4) room service menus not left so we constantly had to call for it. 5) charges made on room that were not ours. Small and irritating details to contend with as a guest which should not need our attention at these prices.

This is an expensive and over-priced hotel that I would describe as just about OK if it were $100 cheaper per night, but is resting on its (very considerable) laurels. The foyer and public areas on the ground floor are immaculate and gaudy, but the service provided was absolutely terrible and the staff treated me with contempt and discourtesy at all times. The room itself was tackily decorated and not particularly clean, small and pokey it was dark and faced onto a courtyard with a noisy extractor fan. There was no hotel information booklet in the room. The breakfast was almost inedible and expensive; there is no lunch menu (a repeat of the breakfast options is offered). To provide a few examples of the difficulties I faced during my short stay: the room provided was not the type booked (two beds, rather than one bed); the complimentary water requested on arrival was delivered 24 hours later, after three further requests; the complimentary shoe shine did not happen on either night (despite me complaining on the first night), so I had to pay $20 to get it done; the wake up call requested on the morning of departure didn't occur; the staff wanted to charge me for printing out a single side of A4 paper; no receipt was provided at checkout and promised email never arrived (the accounts department at my company eventually obtained it); decoration work in the corridor meant that the room stank of paint fumes; staff weren't able to call a cab for me, telling me to use Uber.

Unprofessional At Marriott Autograph Collection
This Mayflower property in Washington DC is laughably designated a Marriott Autograph collection, but the service was illegibly sub-par. Check in time was 4:00, but after an exhausting trip, we were told that due to housekeeping, the room would not be ready for us till after 6:00. When my office called for the hotel manager, they were transferred to customer service and placed on hold for 20 minutes, eventually they just hung up the phone. Also, our reservation was specifically for 3 people, but when we requested a cot, we were told the room could only accommodate 2 guests, and that they had no other rooms available. It was only after we packed our bags and went downstairs to the lobby and complained AGAIN, did they suddenly find another room. Extremely unprofessional for the Marriott brand! Whomever is hiring in the HR dept and also training the hotel staff is doing a terrible job. I have now requested our company travel office to switch my upcoming trip to Toronto from a Marriott to a Hyatt Hotel.
