    Exceptional 10.0
Clean hotel that is centrally located
My stay at Hotel Karlan was an extremely pleasant one. It's situated in a convenient location right off of I-15 N. I found a number of destinations in SD to be about 20 minutes away from this hotel which is not too bad considering the layout of CA. The hotel itself is extremely clean and believe me; I'm extremely picky with cleanliness. The room was spacious with a nice balcony overlooking the grounds. I especially loved the extra large shower (you can literally fit 4 normal sized people in there) and the bed. The mattress and pillows were extremely comfortable. Customer service was excellent. Evelyn cleaned our room during our stay and did an excellent job. She was very detail oriented. Also, anything that I requested such as extra towels or shampoo was immediately taken care of. For anyone that is disabled, I would call the hotel first to check into the accommodations, as it appeared to be not too handicapped friendly. There are some steps that you will have to climb that could potentially become a hindrance. Other than that, the grounds are beautiful and serene. They also have a lovely restaurant that I dined at twice called the Asada Grill which is about a 5-minute walk from the main lobby. The front desk was helpful and friendly and provided the most delicious warm cookies – chocolate chip with walnuts. If I ever go back to SD in the future, I will definitely be staying at Hotel Karlan - no question.

    Exceptional 10.0
    100% hidden gem!
I can't give the hotel praise enough! I found this place by chance and this is the hidden gem of the century, in my opinion. Check in with Rula at the front desk was wonderful. She was very professional and had us to our rooms very quickly. I had reserved a king room, but asked for a room with two queens. That was not available but she offered to send in a rollaway bed, free of charge. We said we would try the air mattress we had brought, for my son, and would let her know but were okay for now. Our room was GREAT. It was so spacious and well taken care of. It had a large bathroom, and additional sink and vanity area, a large bedroom area and a mini fridge. Elena was the next front desk person we dealt with and she was wonderful as well. About two nights in, my son was miserable on the floor, and we approached Elena with Rula's offer, and she immediately had a rollaway bed sent over. That made things better for him. Fast forward to check out, where I had an emergency at home that I had to be involved in. Matt, from the front desk, worked tirelessly to help me get that arranged with He was AMAZING!! THe only problem we had was out neighbors, and I don't fault the hotel for that. 3 of the 5 nights I spent there involved me getting in touch with the front desk, who had security come right away. It helped, momentarily, but the nights were definitely long. I would definitely recommend this property!

    Very good 8.0
Good, but they need to work on the details
I'd stay here again - great price / location. However, there were some minor details that kept this from being top shelf. I stayed at this hotel two nights - one booked through and a second night that I added directly with the hotel prior to our arrival. At check in, I was *very* clear about all the details on this and they assured me it would be no problem. The next day, when I was arriving at the venue for my daughter's wedding, I got an email thanking me for checking out. I called the number and after having to repeat myself a thousand times, the person explained I would have to stop by the front desk to switch rooms and get a new room key. I told them that was unacceptable, because I was AT a wedding and had sent someone with my key back to the hotel to retrieve some items. Further discussion ensued in which the representative kept repeating "it's no problem, you just have to stop by the front desk." Finally I was able to speak to a manager who was able to resolve the problem, but nonetheless, it was a major inconvenience for me and my daughter, who now had to stop at the front desk (all the way on the other side of the property from the room) to pick up a new room key to get the items for the wedding. Issue #2 - we only had 2 rolls of toilet paper provided to us for a two night stay and had to call and have more sent. Not a huge problem but I expect more from a Doubletree. Issue #3 - had to return to front desk twice with room keys that stopped working.

    Good 6.0
    Bad customer service.
I was overcharged by room service and when I went to the front desk to get my final bill, I pointed it out to the the lady in the front desk. She said there was nothing she could do and that I would have to get it corrected by the restaurant on site. I asked her why she wasn't able to help me and she rudely said there was nothing she couldn't do. I asked her where the restaurant was on site and she rudely asked me, "Well where did you eat?". I told her , "In my room, hence the Room Service charges on my bill". I was so pissed off at this point. She told me the restaurant was a few buildings over so I walked over and and got it adjusted where the person said I could have been helped at front desk . Then I walked back to the front desk to get my final bill and check out. The gentleman there saw my interaction earlier and apologized. My overall stay was good. The experience at the end really upset me though. I don't think that people should be in the customer service industry if they don;t know how to deal or treat customers.

Decent hotel, pay for most things, Service okay
So I arrive at the hotel, and parking is not included with the stay. Its 13.95 per vehicle, and breakfast is not included at the rate I paid. It is included at an additional charge of 20 dollars.Okay. No problem. At least customer service was open and honest from the start. The property is well maintained. I arrive at the room to drop my things off. The cable does not work. Called the office at 4pm. They sent a tech to work on it. I stepped out for several hours. Arrived back at 930pm. The cable was still out. I called the front and they told me they called Direct TV and reset the hardware, and believed it was still working. They said, 'we can change your room or give you free breakfast. But since it is late, we do not know if you want to change rooms at this time.' I decided to stay put and deal with it since I was going to bed anyway. So I chose the breakfast. When I got up at 6am, I began to notice multiple issues with the room. About 4 tiles on the tub wall were cracked and missing. The tub was clean though. The grout/caulking in the tub was stained with a rust color giving the appearance that these particular spots were not cleaned thoroughly. The bathroom mirror left corner was broken and appeared to have a plastic tape to cover the edge. The lamp in the corner did not work. Breakfast was fine...not worth 20 dollars to me but okay. Overall I was not satisfied. I will not stay here again. Just my experience.
