About Boulders Resort & Spa, Curio Collection by Hilton

Location.
Towering cacti, 12-million-year-old boulders and free-roaming wildlife share the Sonoran Desert landscape at the Boulders Resort & Spa, Curio Collection by Hilton located in Scottsdale, Ariz. This renowned resort is adjacent to El Pedregal's apparel boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and a branch of the Heard Museum.

Hotel Features.
Acclaimed architect Bob Bacon pitched a tent and actually lived on the desert grounds during the resort's planning stages. His concepts yielded a lobby with wood-beam ceilings, gracefully curved sandstone-hued walls and a collection of Native American artwork. Five on-site restaurants include Palo Verde, with its signature Southwestern cuisine, and the Spa Cafe, whose health-enhancing dishes utilize plants nurtured at the resort's herb garden. The 33,000-square-foot Spa at The Boulders offers signature therapeutic treatments and private meditations. The spa houses steam rooms, saunas, an O'furo Japanese bath, a meditation labyrinth and an outdoor pool. Resort activities include heart-pumping boulder climbs. Private lessons and weekly clinics are conducted at the resort's eight tennis courts. Conde Nast Traveler has ranked this resort as one of America's "75 Top Golf Resorts" for 14 consecutive years. Two Jay Morrish-designed golf courses provide 36 holes of championship-level play. Three outdoor pools include a lodge-style pool with a waterfall. The Boulders Resort & Spa, Curio Collection by Hilton also offers a 30,000-square-foot conference space center, meeting rooms, and a business center with complimentary WiFi.

Guestrooms.
The 221 adobe-style casitas feature hand-crafted beamed ceilings, painted and carved wooden furniture, walk-in closets and weathered and overstuffed leather chairs. Beds are dressed with Egyptian-cotton linens and reveal southwestern-style design. Amenities include high-speed wired or wireless Internet access, CD players and DVD players on request, and MP3 docking stations. Accommodations extend to furnished patios or balconies. Bathrooms are stocked with Clear by LXR toiletries.

Should be great - spoilt by the renovations
Let’s start with what isn't so great - the renovations. This has clearly been going on longer than planned and even today it is clear that the work is far from finished. This means that the main reception area remains closed, so does the pool, so does this upmarket restaurant (which is built into the boulders) and perhaps more strangely, so does the bakery - even though the latter is actually 500 yards away (a shame no-one told us that before we walked there). There are other swimming pools, but they are a good 10 minute walk away - and walking to the spa means you have to share the track with the ubiquitous golf carts that the hotel uses to shuttle everyone around. On one walk, we had to dodge the hurtling vehicles on six occasions, which isn't exactly relaxing. On the plus side, are the rooms which are great; having a fire in the evening is a lovely touch. The people are also first rate, they just can’t do enough for you, Stacey the concierge is terrific, as was the GM, Christina who quite appreciated our disappointment and kindly treated us to dinner. And of course, the Boulders themselves - the location is truly stunning. So overall, I would score this 7/10 – and I would advise you to wait until the resort is fully refurbished and running properly before booking. I would also suggest that you call rather than believe the website as this should be scoring a 9 or 10.

Had a very nice stay here. Room was very clean and modern. Property is kept very well. Service was good. The only problem we had was with the wifi and ability to access it. Not sure why it was not connecting.

Too many errors for a 5 star resort
I was overbilled and need to catch and clear up the problem. My room wasn't cleaned one day. They didn't have the cable I needed to use the TV/computer connective service. I was stung by a scorpion in my bed! And the Mexican restaurant connected with the resort isn't good. Also, the food portions at the spa cafe are tiny and the prices are very high.

Beautiful spot, but what a hassle!!
Going through Hotels.com was not a great experience. We were first charged twice and then we were told we had two king beds, but there was one king bed and two double beds. The charges that The Boulders had did not match up with the charges that were made by Hotels.com (aka Expedia I was told by The Boulders). So The Boulders is partly to blame since Hotels.com (Expedia) is the 3rd party we were dealing with, The Boulders should convey to the 3rd party details about the property. The bedcover on our king bed had dried, bloody snot on the underside that was NOT ours! It was a good location though. I would like to go back to Boulders Spa Curio Collection in Carefree AZ, but would book and do things a lot differently!!
