Great location, but a little ‘tired’
I decided at the last minute to come to Edinburgh and booked the train and hotel the day before I was due to leave. I booked this hotel mainly because of it’s vey central location and it’s reasonable prices. I was surprised just how close this hotel is to Waverley station; literally less than 2 minutes walk from the entrance to the station. My room (415) overlooked South St. David Street and Princes Street. The public areas and the room(s) look really quite ‘tired’ and look as if they haven’t had a refurbishment for a considerable time. However, the hotel was always very clean, both the public areas and the room(s). The room I stayed in was also surprisingly big; I had booked a double bed, but honestly, I felt like it was more of a queen than a double. I also had a chair, coffee table, and desk & chair, and there was still a lot of space. I was early surprised how big the room was. And there was a good sized bathroom too. The staff; while always polite and couteous, I just didn’t get a friendly vibe from the front of house staff. That is not to say that they were rude, rather, I’d say they were efficient at their job, but just didn’t go that extra mile in terms of a little friendliness. I spoke to 4 staff during my stay, and got the same general vibe from each of them. Overall a very good hotel in a perfect location that is reasonably priced, that I do recommend, and I will be staying here again for sure next time I visit Edinburgh.

Location was convenient if arriving by train - across the street from Waverley station. That was the only plus in staying there for us. Have to walk a couple flights up steps with all your bagge to the main desk, - noone at front door to help. The woman at the front desk was not helpful, brash and bordering on rude. Got the feeling we were "second rate" since we did not book directly with the hotel, but booked through Expedia. Have to leave key at front desk every time you leave hotel, and hand in a piece of paper to retrieve it upon returning. Breakfast was lacking, vibe in the hotel was dark, non-inviting. For the price (about $250/night for a room with a view of an alley way, and two twin beds crammed together) was way over priced. They do NOT have a secure internet connection provided by the hotel, so we did not use their internet access they suggested while we we were there. The City is beautiful - stay elsewhere to enjoy your accommodations while there.

My 60th Birthday trip with friends
Hotel is central and close to historic and cultural centres of interest. Breakfast was expensive for what it was and level of service was similar to cheaper Premier Inn (e.g. food was set out but if you wanted eggs other than scrambled they were freshly prepared) but at least one can dine and if lucky enough to get a seat by a window then also ponder The Scott Monument). My room was very small and was "tired"; whilst generally clean the washroom had stained grout (particularly behind the door). On arrival the dresser mirror needed wiping as it had water marks (or something similar) on it. My weekend was completely spoilt by the Hotel and Expedia's deposit policy. Three weeks before my stay I phoned the hotel and asked to make payment which they said they could not accept over the phone. Upon arrival I made my payment and spotted a card transaction receipt (not openly given to me) that the deposit had already been taken. The hotel denied it had been taken but that this was a holding amount that was still in my account and that it would be re-credited to my account in 3 working days. It is not in my account and I have conformed that it is not returned for 8 days. This was particularly embarrassing when I came to pay for a meal for all my friends on Saturday night. Neither Expedia or Old Waverley had made it clear to me, on 3 separate occasions and despite being asked, the full implications of the deposit process that has been deployed.

Central location does not make up for the vastly over-priced room and price-gouging bar drinks. My single room was awful: bass vibrations from outside music nearly shook me off the bed and I had to move to a room at the back of the building. Apparently the music noise is a regular weekly event according to the staff, as I found out on both of my visits. So why did they put me in a room where you can't sleep? The curtains were torn. The wifi went down and did not come back all evening. And the stairs -- everywhere, even to get to the elevator. Not worth the hassle.

Mum and daughters in Edinburgh
My sister chose this hotel as it was near to the station and tourist area for an overnight stay with my 82 year old mum. I decided to join them as a suprise! When I got there I asked if we could have room s on the same floor. Despite being very busy they managed to juggle so we were nearly opposite! brilliant. The few steps up to reception were no bother and every member of staff bent over backwards to help us in a friendly and not stuffy way. We ordered afternoon tea in the lounge and it arrived with freshly made sandwiches, assortment of cakes and hot scones. Yummy. The rooms were very comfortable and clean, my sister's was at the front with an amazing view over to the old town, my double at the back didn't have a view at all... But exactly as advertised, I'm not complaining, it was my choice. Breakfast, which had freshly prepared hot buffet items was delicious and taken in the restaurant with those amazing views and yet more friendly efficient staff. And our final hours were made easier by being able to leave our few luggage items whilst we visited the castle before our train back South. Thanks to everyone at the Old Waverley, we'll be back
