A little bit tired.
Car park wasn't well sign-posted but we found it eventually. Using the rear entrance we had to walk between two members of staff who were smoking. The ground was littered with cigarette ends. The young man at reception was very welcoming and helpful. Our room was spacious, bedding and towels were beautifully clean and our bed was comfortable. However, our grandson's bed was frayed at the bottom corner as was the net curtains which were past their best. There was no toilet roll holder, the toilet rolls having been placed on the cistern. Breakfast was really good, tasty and plentiful. The County Hotel Carlisle is adequate for a stop-over on the way to Scotland. A few tweaks here and there would bring it back up to standard_ there are some really great original features at the hotel.

Poor 2.0
Just awful
Very dated hotel. The carpet was bunched up enough for posters to be on the walls about tripping hazards. The hotel shares part of the building with a pub/club, my room #126 overlooks the alley so no way to escape the noise of drunk people congregating to smoke, or even the music from the venue. Ended up having to buy earplugs just to be able to sleep. In daylight I was able to see many many cobwebs everywhere (by the ceiling above the bed, above the bedroom window, in the window frame in the bathroom, and also at eye level above the TV - it was all rather dusty so had been there for some time. The shower leaked so the bathroom floor was all wet and the floor covering is wonky from prolonged exposure. The kicker came on the first day when I went hiking on the Hadrian's Wall path. In the morning I was told in no uncertain terms to hand in my key when leaving the premises, which I did. I then arrived in Carlisle on the hike around noon. Returned to the hotel, claimed my key and went to my room and discovered that housekeeping had decided I had checked out, so had gone through my room and thrown away my snacks for more hiking and my toiletry bag which was in the bathroom. Luckily my suitcase and other things were still in the cupboard, which had not been checked obviously. Also very lucky - I was able to reclaim my property from reception, no apology. Had to rebuy the food, obviously inedible after being in a bin bag with who knows what?!

At check-in, I was given a room that was not made up. They gave me another room. It had a terrible smell. Finally, they gave me a third room which was very large and nice but the walls were paper thin and I could hear everything that went on in the room next to mine. The breakfast was fine the first morning but on the second morning a busload of Chinese tourist took over the dining room and they ravaged the food. They were constantly hopping up and down for food and taking way more than necessary so there wasn't much left for others. The staff tried to keep up but couldn't so items on the buffet were not replenished and tables were not cleared.

The County 'will do' and long may it continue..
This hotel is well located in the city centre with off street parking. The staff are polite and on hand. The room was large and warm enough with large blackout curtains. Noise from the clubs and bars was ever present and this will be an issue for some but despite our windows being old single glazed ones that rattled in the wind the noise wasn't too bad. Staff were pleasant in the night when we returned in th early hours and this made a nice change from the nearby ibis hotel who overtly resent their guests joining in with the revellry outside. This hotel once was very grand and time has taken its toll, we found it to be very clean, spacious and comfortable and excellent value for money. Other hotels in immediate vicinity are more polished around their edges but are almost twice the price and frankly their not worth it. Advice to the hotel, perhaps a revamp on the bathroom decor, renew the expired bath panel, flooring and taps as they have reached the end of their life and possibly reached that in the late 90's, but it was clean and with some jiggery pokers it all worked, it just didn't look great.

Horrendous stay - Noisy and unhelpful staff
Horrendous - noise from pub across street, staff were unhelpful and dismissive. Got told that the fact that it was noisy was on the web - its says that a noise-free room cannot be guaranteed but this was ridiculous - couldn't even here a movie on my laptop properly it was that noisy. Wasn't offered a room change until I said I was leaving - "last minute cancellation" apparently and then was told by another member of staff when I called the next day requesting a refund that there had been a double room available all along. By the time I had been offered the other room I had decided to leave and didn't actually stay the night. Hotel itself is very tired, threat bare carpet and smell of smoke in public areas. Bathroom and bedroom were clean but again very very dated.
