Pen, but too soon?
As well as the problems to do with Covid19, the hotel is in chaos with renovation work taking place. This means there is scaffolding, noise, and turmoil in the entrance area. The breakfast room is not functioning and the breakfasts delivered to the room were very poor. Dinner in the restaurant was just OK but the place was full of inconsiderate noisy people. Then the water supply in our bedroom was off the next morning. NO shower possible. We were glad to leave. I think the hotel has re-opened too soon. The staff tried to help, gave us a discount and we felt sorry for them. Get yourself sorted out soon, Midland!

misleading advertisement
We were mislead by the images shown on hotels.com and on the hotels website. The lobby was still under construction however we were under the impression that it had been completed. We were told that we should have received an e-mail to inform us but we didn’t. We would have gone elsewhere had we known as we were celebrating a special occasion and this construction work took away from this when we arrived. The room, however, had been completed and was beautiful. We were just disappointed that we had been mislead and were unable to receive any form of refund for the inconvenience. We also hadn’t been informed before our stay that the breakfast included in our stay consisted of a small ‘continental’ takeaway bag delivered to our room. We expected that the restaurant would be offering a hot breakfast.

Great hotel, lousy service
Hotel is impressive to look at even though there was refurb work going in on. We stayed in the Midland suite which is the hotel’s largest and was, again, impressive. However, it’s in the service that the hotel let’s itself down. We’d booked for 3 including a child but the suite was set up with just one double bed. When I rang down to reception they confirmed they had a booking for 3 but told me I was at fault for not ringing ahead and requesting an extra bed for a child. House keeping turned up without a mask or PPE and set up the extra bed. This is ironic as when we rang for room service we were told that the menu was dramatically reduced and we’d have to come to reception to collect it “because COVID”. Likewise the breakfast arrangements were a stale croissant and some other continental bits left outside the door in a paper bag of the sort you’d get on a commuter train. Only two paper cups in the room for 3 people. Thoughtless and about the standard of a travelodge. COVID presents challenges but that doesn’t mean service should go out of the window. A week earlier we stayed at a Rocco Forte hotel and had an amazing experience. The manager of the Midland should book themselves into a RF hotel and experience just how good service can be despite a pandemic.

Below expectations 🙁
Our stay was a little disappointing. We were advised to wear masks in public areas and corridors - we were the only people wearing them, other guests did not adhere to this requirement and staff did not challenge. Our room was sufficient size but not suitable to eat the breakfast that was delivered to our room. We had to sit on the end of the bed and there was no table to use. This was not our choice, it is now hotel policy. The head board on our bed was broken (a whole piece missing from the middle) and the layer of dust on skirting boards was thick enough to suggest the room had not been cleaning properly in months. Not ideal when hygiene standards need to be exemplary. Not just because I would expect this from The Midland but also due to COVID. The room and corridors were very ‘tired’ looking and in real need of TLC. I wouldn’t recommend and wouldn’t stay again.

Overnight stay
The hotel is a shadow of its former self, we were put in room 536, next to the the laundry area where the corridor was very run down, the carpets were dirty and tiles off the wall.!! The swimming pool for such a large hotel is tiny, you would be lucky to get 10 people in it!! It is ideal for getting around Manchester, but I personally wouldn't stay again

Great stay bar the check in delay!
Lovely hotel. We were aware of construction work but wasnt noisy. Only disappointment was checking in at 15.40 and rooms not ready! Also we booked 2 rooms as a family of 4 (with older children) and rooms not near each other or on the same floor. Bar staff attentive but not intrusive and rooms lovely, and immaculately clean.
