Poor 2.0
Sent me to a different hotel
I chose this hotel due to its location to family and because it was located just off a convenient tube stop. I booked it several weeks ahead on Expedia and paid for it up front. When I arrived at the hotel however, the front desk acted as if I had no reservation. After I proved that I indeed had booked that hotel for those dates, they told me that I had been transferred to their "sister property" the Copthorne Tara Hotel and that I should have received a call or email (I hadn't). Along the way they blamed Expedia for losing my reservation (which I think is a flat out lie since at the same time the Bailey's hotel was sending me promotional email asking me about my stay) - so they got my information somewhere. I believe they simply overbooked and were scrambling to do something about it. Here's the worst part, the Copthorne Tara is a lower class hotel with cheaper room rates, yet there was no effort to compensate me for the trouble or room rate difference. The Copthorne Tara is also located on a less convenient tube stop that added at least 20 minutes to my commute - in a lot of cases I had to take an Uber because the Circle/District stops there so infrequently. I noticed that the Millenium corporate office was located in the Copthorne and took the time to explain my situation. I met with the GM who was pleasent who assured me they would take care of it - they haven't, nor have they attempted to contact me since.

I know this hotel has many good reviews and it was the reason why I booked it for my travel with my mum. This travel was my gift to her for her 60th birthday and London was our first stop. Positives: The hotel is a beautiful architectural, well maintained, clean building located infront of the subway! There are many restaurants close by and Hyde Park is only about 10min walk away from the hotel. Negatives: During checkin the staff members were nice and friendly. But the remaining days with different members at the front desk, that was not the case for the rest of our trip. They were not rude but not nice either. I felt abit uncomfortable asking information or directions so tried to sort most things out myself. Our room was small but it was neat and that was fine. Our view from the room was the wall of the opposite building. That's ok since we weren't going to stay in the room all day. But during the evening for some reason our air vent brought in cigarette smoke smells into the room. During the day and afternoon it was fine. Just during the whole night it was difficult to sleep and our throats were uncomfortable from it (mum and I don't smoke). Also when I was going in and out of the hotel, most of the time I needed to open the door myself when the doorman was there. He would see me but rather than helping he continued his conversation with other staff members. But then he would help the door with the person behind me? We just wanted to be treated equally.

Great hotel; confusing Expedia booking rules
The room we booked (a deluxe double) was great - large, clean, quiet with a very spacious, clean and comfortable bathroom. The hotel was in a location that was a little quieter neighbourhood than we expected but still very walking distance to the major London sites. We booked this hotel through Expedia but did not pay upfront (first time doing it this way). This led to the negatives of our stay at this hotel. Upon checkin, we gave our credit card for deposit as per usual. Later that night, we received a call from the front desk asking us to come down and pay because Expedia wanted their money. We went downstairs and paid reluctantly. We found this very strange but the desk explained that this was how Expedia operated. At check out, we wanted a copy of the the bill - and they said they couldn't do it since it was an Expedia booking. Rather than arguing, we left but the overall experience with the hotel and Expedia left a bad taste in our mouth. We ate breakfast at the hotel for three of the five mornings but wanted to pay after our meal (and not put it on the room charge). The staff in the restaurant (Olives) had a lot of trouble with this as well - alternating between not knowing how to do it, confused and generally trying to make us 'just put it on the room charge'. Again, we thought this was very bizarre compared to our other experiences in many other hotels around the world.

Dishonest hotel
The rooms themselves are fine and the hotel is in good condition. However, I have great concerns about the honesty of this hotel. We had an event to attend in Windsor, very early in the morning. I had done some research about the cost of a taxi but because of the early hour, I was worried it might be difficult to find a taxi. I asked the hotel if they could arrange the taxi, I asked the hotel clerk twice how much she thought it would cost, at first she refused to say and then said it depends on the driver, I assumed it would be a metered taxi. Instead it was a private van (for two of us) and he charged twice what I expected and demanded cash only. I felt very ripped off. A taxi back to the city, in traffic, was less than the hotel arranged van. When it was time for our party to go to the airport we again asked for transportation assistance. We requested to pay for it on the room. On the morning of departure, no van/shuttle was present. The concierge then called somebody and a van showed up. We were told we could not pay for it on the room, but could use a card. Once in the van the driver stated cash only and drove us to the ATM of his choosing. This made us a very uncomfortable and felt like a scam. We came home and changed our account numbers and ordered new cards. It appears this hotel has no problem scamming their guests and is clearly in cahoots with the van service to rip off its guests. This was our second time at Bailey's and it will be our last.

Only place I’ll stay in London from now on
This hotel gives you such a great London experience. Beautiful hotel, beautiful lobby and absolute PERFECT location to explore London (as well as if you’re going to do daytrips to nearby towns). It’s right across the street from Gloucester underground station, which is also next to a Waitrose (grocery store) that is open late, as well as shops and restaurants all along the street. You can literally get to Westminster (the stop for Big Ben and the London eye) in 5 minutes on the tube. We could easily come back to the hotel if we needed to grab something or take a quick nap! As for day trips, all the main rail stations are just 15 mins away on the tube. The neighbourhood in general is cute and bustling with people without being too “touristy and busy”. (Note The hop on and off bus also has a stop right out front for one of their lines). The staff member at check in was super friendly, sorry didn’t catch his name! There’s also a security person always in the lobby, as well as a great concierge. Our room was gorgeous, super comfy! We stayed there for 5 nights. Never going to stay anywhere else in London!
