Nice hotel but overbooked so we had no room
In a nutshell, booked double room ages ago, turned up and was obvious from start problem with room , we were told room not ready and offered complementary drink, 10mins later manger arrived said due to rain ceiling collapsed and could only offer us a single room, really ? We were shown room and said no as not what we had booked and paid for , no other room available, we asked to see room we were booked to have but told no as health and safety, after some discussions we were offered a room I Westminster but had to pay for that and await a refund from this hotel , I could not afford to do that, all in all and to cut a very long story short it took two hours to get no where , by then we were both hungry and tired and my planned eve was ruined , I choose that hotel as it was central. We were given completely dinner drinks and free breakfast and we stayed in the single room as it was useless and had no choice, the hotel has a saying if u r not happy with your stay they will make it right well I am sorry but on this occasion they completely failed, we had a dreadful nights sleep and I am very upset about the whole thing as due to tiredness our Sunday was ruined, I had saved a long time to treat my partner to this weekend away and feel terribly let down, it would have helped if they staff had been honest and said they had over booked , On the plus side it is a nice hotel , ladies loos were a bit dirty food was nice, I hate to say negative things but feel so let down , sorry

Good location, not a great hotel
I've stayed in old hotels in Europe before and know to manage your expectations from American standards of hotel size and comfort. Being an HH member I've stayed in Hilton's across 5 continents. This one was sub par for Hilton quality. To be honest I've stayed in a nicer Hilton in Chad. The pictures are flattering of the rooms, it reminded me of staying in a college dorm room. Very tight. There was construction on my floor and the noise throughout the day was incredible. The door on my room didn't lock, but to the staff's credit they fixed it immediately. The bathroom was very small but I expected that. The bed was very uncomfortable and seemed to be made of two separate pieces pushed together. It felt like the under part was made of sandbags (obviously it isn't). The breakfast is really good. The lobby and lobby bathrooms were very nice. The location to holborn station is excellent. Don't use Russell station as it's the same distance but not a straight shot. Staff were accommodating but not great. The concierge service was very helpful. Don't expect to get a hotel room a head of time even if you email or offer to pay a fee to upgrade/early check in. I tried this weeks ahead of time knowing my flight schedule and they still made me wait almost 3 hours for a room. I'm not expected to be treated as special but I did my due diligence by trying to get this done weeks in advance. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel. I don't do this often.

Bad experience
Had booked a large room with king size bed for 2 nights with Hotels.com reward nights. Got a small room with a queen size bed and an AC not working (27 degrees celsius in rom). Room in bad shape, old and scruffy. After complaining they offered us a new room with the AC working but still a queen size bed, old room and scruffy. Back to reception again and got the explanation that a free night through Hotels only qualified for this category of room. Showed the confirmation that specified a bigger room with a King size bed. They explained that the hotel was fully booked and that they could not do anything. Checked their webpages and found many vacant rooms.... Insisted on talking to the manager and after a crystal clear speech they finally found a room in the basement with a King Size bed. large room just like we booked and in mostly good shape (... AC out of order...). Tired of complaining, went to bed. Breakfast OK. Receptionist lying, not having the freedom from the manager to deliver a good solution. Obviously a leadership problem. Sorry Double Tree Hilton, this was a bd experience and not what I have experienced in other DD Hilton Hotels.

Under par for the Hilton name
Overall I was disappointed with the DoubleTree by Hilton - West End, for the Hilton name I expected more from the hotel and room in general, the room was smaller than expected. The bed was put up against the wall so there was only one entry point onto the bed, it was also up again the wall that separated the hallway and the room, so we could hear quite a bit of what was going on outside which was annoying especially as there seemed to be a bit of noise in the hallways. The housekeeping staff would normally come around 9-11 in the morning, this is the earliest I've ever experienced in a hotel, they would also return several times within this time frame if they did not clean the room. The hot water in the room took a few minutes to get start working, I was not aware of this until I rang reception to complain. However the overall cleanliness of the room was good. A point of concern for me was that the elevators were functional without the need to swipe your key card, so anyone, even a non guest could walk in and have access to the floors. If there is another security feature, then I am not aware of it. The hotel lobby was vibrant, spacious and met the standards I would expect of a hotel that is associated with the Hilton brand.

deal for an overnight stay or access to West End
There is not much to say about this hotel. Very quiet (if at the back) and very comfortable. Good sized bed and good water pressure in the shower, although I did need to leave it running for a while to get hot water through. I only used it for a place to rest my head for one night whilst in London on business and for that purpose it was perfect. Good value (assuming London hotels prices can be considered as offering any value) based on price relative to other hotels in the area I looked it. 5 min walk to British Library to the west, Russel Sq tube to the north and Holborn tube to south - 15-20 min walk to Covent Garden. I walked to St Pauls to the east for dinner with friends and it only took me 15 mins (brisk). Word of note - the room i had was what i would call snug (enough space for 1 person but two people would over crowd it) and if you are on the large size the shower is very tight. I was ok but i can see issues on that front. It might spoil a stay for some. I'd stay here again if i get a good price
