Not the best Marriott
Very, very disappointed with our recent stay at your Durham Royal County. Personally we think as a family this was one of our most "let down" stays we have stayed at. The old part which we had a bedroom in needs completely renovating. The toilet handle looked as though it was going to fall off after the next flush. Toilet seat needed changing due to wear. Grouting in the bathroom needed attention. The over-powering heat within the room was unbearable even though we had the windows open and the mobile fans on. Beds were nowhere as comfy as the ones we have recently slept on. Outside at the back was over-grown with neglect and weeds where it could have been made into a lovely little resting place over-looking the river. Went away to recover from my wife's surgery for an overnight rest and felt completely let-down and was all in all a complete waste of time and money. Our honest opinion - others may say otherwise. Other couples we were speaking too also felt that it was a neglected old building, very airless rooms - again in the old part. Did not like all the lifts going from one part to the other. Wish we would have known and then explained about my wife's knee surgery. All in all I am in the "dog house" - never mind I tried to please.!!!!

Exceptional 10.0
Enjoyable stay.
Not sure if there was an issue with our booking as the person on the desk didn’t seem like she could find my name. We were given a suite rather than a standard room we booked, so this review may be a little biased! As you can imagine the room was excellent, very clean and everything we needed to make it a pleasant stay. We had travelled up to drop our son off for University, we chose the Marriott this time as it’s in the centre of the city so everything in walking distance. We struggled to find somewhere for an evening meal as it seemed a lot of places were serving the same time of food which appeared to cater for students predominantly. Because of this we ended up dining in the hotel and we were very glad we did, the food was excellent. I can thoroughly recommend the beef brisket, possibly one of the best I’ve tasted. Overall I can recommend the Marriott and would definitely stay there again.

Hotel perfectly positioned
This hotel is perfectly positioned right in the centre, within 2 minutes walking distance to the city centre. The staff were very helpful, however I feel that we paid well and truly over the odds for our room. We were then charged £14 for car parking and an extra £4 for an extra hour that we spent in the town on the last day. The hotel did treat us to a voucher for us to go for a Starbucks coffee as it was our twins 14th birthday on the day we checked in. There was also a glass of wine offered in reception for anyone booking in on the following day. The room was generally clean but dated. Grubby sofa, dirty grout and a poor shower in the bathroom and a toilet that gurgled and took a while to fill up before you could flush it again. We had the family room, but the second bed was a double which seems odd! It was really cold in Durham and both our bedroom and my elder son's bedroom were cold. We tried to get the heating working but it just blew cold (we should have contacted reception to sort this out, but in true Brit style we just stuck it out (silly us). Also there was no bedside table next to my side of the bed, just an empty space where I assume one had once been. As it was a family room, I would have thought the drink making supplies would have included hot chocolate or something more child orientated. In the leisure facility, the Jacuzzi and fun showers weren't working.

Very good 8.0
Considering the price and the new refurbishment it must have been done quickly, and cheap has they only painted half a ceiling, the taps in basin were difficult to turn on etc to close to the wall, the drain in bath was rusted, the windows were a bit loose . the cleaning staff were very friendly and hard working, I was surprised that there wasn’t any coffee machine in room I thought that would be normal and they are neater than a kettle and teabags . Glad there was a fridge in room and it was empty. The staff were very friendly; Starbucks spoils the look of hotel, would be better to have something that was Durham and Newcastle tea shop etc. But I find the north a lot better and friendly than the south

Poor 2.0
"Riverside Rooms" like a Sauna and uninhabitable
This hotel has a major problem with it’s “Riverside” rooms (Rooms 151-167) and probably also with the 2nd floor rooms above them. These rooms are like a sauna and it is impossible to get a good night’s sleep in them. Even by opening all the windows (to the extent of their restriction), using the two white cooling units generously provided in the room by the hotel and removing the duvet from it’s cover and sleeping under that alone, the rooms were still far too hot for a comfortable night’s sleep on a normal October night in the North of England. Until Marriot install real air-conditioning in these rooms they are not fit to sleep in. My wife is from the tropics and is used to these conditions, but assured me that she would have had a better night’s sleep in a Travelodge or on a park bench! The hotel is well aware of the problem with these rooms. Other reviewers have reported the same problem with the Riverside rooms. I would advise you when booking to ensure that the hotel does not allocate any of these rooms to you, and if they do on arrival, immediately ask to be moved to another room. The Riverside rooms are not fit to be in a Marriot hotel. Marriot urgently need to provide the funds to fit proper air-conditioning to this wing of the hotel, as they seriously damage the Marriot name and reputation. Otherwise the hotel just about reaches minimum Marriot standards, but it is a bit tired and in need of renovation.
