The Opal San Francisco
We have spent 3 nights at this hotel and really enjoyed our stay there. It is a lovely hotel, very clean and stuff very friendly and helpful. The closest station for the Bart train is Civic Centre and it's about 15/20 min walking. I have read a lot of reviews about homeless ppl and not sure what is the matter about them, they do no harm and they are everywhere anyway. If i'd go to SF again i will defo choose the OPAL again.

Would NOT recommend this place to anyone
The condition of the hotel was awful, wifi was so slow it was not worth using, the rooms were so outdated that you felt dirty inside them. The staff on reception were ok though. The neibourhood was not too far away from the good parts of San Francisco but just down the road from the hotel there are a lot of tramps smoking crack

An accommodating accommodation
The neighbourhood is typical of San Francisco - too many homeless people (who keep to themselves and rarely approach tourists), lots of traffic, a fair bit of construction (new hospital building going up across the street), excellent transport links (bus stops right outside with express buses to cover long journeys e.g. Legion of Honor, beach, Union Sq, etc.) and a good smattering of restaurants, pharmacies and supermarkets about 5-10 minutes' walk away. The Opal staff are faultlessly helpful and polite. The guest laundry is extremely welcome. The rooms are not modern but very comfortable. If you are near the street, there is quite a bit of street noise. Our disappointment was the complementary breakfast: fruit, toaster waffles and bread, spreads, yogurts, hardboiled eggs but no cereal. A lot of LA hotels are offering omelettes, waffle irons, cereals and porridge - it would behoove a SF hotel to join in. I don't like to think that The Opal skimps on breakfast offerings so that guests are moved to frequent Mel's Diner, a medium-priced eatery, which is conveniently annexed to the lobby. If your neighbour guests become a nuisance (weekends can be a bit too party in SF), do work with the staff to relocate to a better room - the people on Reception are extremely patient.
