Is this a hotel or a half empty retirement home? Once grand back in the 1950's now very very dated with veneer peeling from bedside tables and bathrooms that should have been redone at least twice in the last 30 years..... (shower curtains for the horrible shower over bath and a wall mounted hairdryer worthy of a museum!! Etc etc) Did not help that I had intended to book the fantastic Quinta da Casa Branca a true luxury boutique 5 star hotel at the same cost as this past it place.... how to rub salt in the wound of my mistake that this was so so inferior....

Overpriced, tired, poor food. Great service.
Mixed picture: we paid quite a lot for a very large suite decorated with lovely furniture and paintings. However, aspects of the room were unsatisfactory: the bathrooms felt like they were at an elderly relative’s house. There was no proper shower, just a hose with a shower head which would balance precariously on a holder on the wall and which came off twice, hitting my children painfully. Food was mediocre: a stodgy pasta dish came with a large dead black fly in it. Club sandwich was average at best.

A beautiful stay at the hotel. Staff, facilities, room, grounds and setting were all perfect. Great food, bar and the view is unmatched. Would love to visit again and I highly recommend it to anyone who is going to be in Madeira.
