Poor 2.0
The worst hotel experience of 2018
This was a special trip. I had booked an upgraded room at the Glasshouse. Immediate problems included the room door to the communal garden would not close, the toilet would not flush, the air conditioning was broken. I stay in around 50 hotels a year. This was by far the worst of 2018. Maintenance arrived to fix the problems and we were told it was safe to leave since they would repair the door before they left. I returned to the room a few minutes later to pack our belongings since the manager had offered to find us another room. No maintenance men in the room and the door to the communal garden was still broken and open leaving our belongings completely at risk.When we returned to the hotel later that night we had been allocated an upgrade and had been gifted a bottle of wine. However the next morning the shampoo bottles were empty and had not been replaced, the shower head was broken and would not stay upright and there was no hot water in the shower! As we left the hotel we heard another guest complaining bitterly therefore my experience was not unique. This is the first negative review I have ever written which indicates how appalled I am. With so much quality choice in Edinburgh I recommend avoiding the Glasshouse.

Great location but quite run down!
When we arrived we were really pleased with the location and walking distance to most of the city. Excited and eager to check-in and see our room (as the hotel is described as a LUXURY 5 star) we were really disappointed with what we were greeted with. Firstly, we appreciate the fact it's hotel built into a old facade and they have done a fab job - but the design and lift system is quite poor. I worry for people that are in a wheelchair. The room was nothing more than a glorified Travelodge with underfloor bathroom heating. Terrible mattress (really old) and completely sunken in and bed was tiny, the toilet holder fell off the wall, half the lights weren't working and the flush handle was half hanging off the wall also. Not 5 star at all and the icing on the cake was the damp smell. As we went over New Year's eve weekend I didn't fancy my chances in moving rooms and I was told that the hotel was fully booked. However, I complained about the standard of the room and they 'found a room' straight away. So we were moved to a huge room, super-kind bed, big bathroom and a much better standard. I still do not feel like its a 5 star luxury hotel and at best 3 star plus. Finally, on the website it says they offer a shuttle service to the airport. When we enquired about this at reception we were told 'ah well, the website is a bit mis-leading as we don't offer that service. But, we can get you a taxi.'

A good 4 Star .. not 5 Star
decided to give this hotel a try, location wise .. its just 5 mins walk from the train station, opposite John Lewis. the hotel has a strange layout, to get to our room you have to go up and then down in the lifts. The hotel is very secure.. to use the lifts you have to have a room key. The room was large .. the bed was okay .. a little soft in the middle..clearly had one of those plastic sheets and woke up sweating like I was in a sauna. The room had climate control.. didn't try the air con (with a December stay), but the noise from the system when we put the heating on was too loud ! The room was clean to a point.. although there were some crumbs in the room on the side.. I guess it the attention to details .. The bath room was good..lots of space .. separate shower and bath. Excellent Wi-Fi in the room. The tv was just okay .. lots of channels .. no high definition channels on the TV .. I would expect this now in a 5* hotel. A good number of channels were Arabic etc.. channel choice did not cover Sky Sports. Didn't use the restaurant .. so cannot comment on the food / breakfast etc.. All in all it was okay .. a little tired in places.

Nice hotel, too many stairs
This hotel is in a good location, you can catch the tram from the airport and it will drop you off almost right in front of the hotel. One thing you should note is that our room was on the first floor and in order to get to it we had to take the elevator to the third floor and walk down two flights of steps. There is no elevator that would take us directly to our floor. The bell man was great about getting our luggage to our room and from our room upon our departure however if you are a person that has difficulty with stairs I caution you about this hotel. The room was nice, it was a good size however there were no drawers so no place to put ones clothes. There was a small hanging closet with a couple of shelves but with two people staying in that room that was absolutely not enough room for both of us. I basically lived out of my suitcase and would have liked to empty it out and re-organize it upon my departure. But that was not feasible. The air conditioning was fantastic and the curtains perfectly blocked out the light making sleeping very comfortable.

Over-rated & disappointing.
At £208.50 for 1 night in a double Queen room that did not include breakfast, this did not represent value for money. Whilst centrally located, the hotel is not in as enviable location as others being on a steep walk down from Princes Street - quite a drag with suitcases. The layout of the interior is complex with many guests struggling to find their rooms; we had to go up to floor 3 in the lift then navigate a long corridor before going back down to floor 2 via stairs with our cases - there was no lift at this end, so not suitable for disabled travellers. When we arrived there was a private wedding function taking place on the roof-top terrace, so we felt out of place and overall the hotel presents quite a stiff corporate image ideal for business and functions but not as appealing to tourists and holiday makers. At first glance the hotel looks chic and modern but there are cracks below the surface; uneven flags & scaffold on the rooftop terrace, faded/worn carpets in rooms and corridors and fixtures in the rooms are showing signs of wear. On a positive the beds are comfortable with perhaps the best ever pilllows we have encountered and the bathrooms were lovely. The view from our room of the John Lewis store was nothing to write home about. Don’t be deceived by the intriguing imposing exterior facade - this does not live up to its ‘signature’ label. Not recommended.
