Needs Improvement
I wanted to really like this hotel, unfortunately the service from the reception staff really let it down. I stayed twice in two weeks, and both times I found check in and out very abrupt. The staff don't acknowledge you when you walk in or out of the hotel either, the sit behind the counter and can't be seen, nor do they look up. On check out I was told I needed to still pay the city tax as I had only paid for 1 night instead of 4. I had already paid the 4 nights at check in. They tried to push the point and asked for proof that I paid. I was so insulted, and refused to pay again. I also pointed out that the first time I stayed the receipt for the city tax was given on check out. Their staff really need better training. Maybe they should check that their staff aren't pocketing the money. Hotel facade is undergoing a revamp - hopefully they start the inside soon as the rooms are very old and tired. Very expensive for what you get. Postive: the location is amazing, roof top terrace is nice, and the bed sheets really soft! The house keeping staff also do a good job.

Fair 4.0
Nice location, but it was a disappointing find.
We had 3 rooms, and there were several issues. The location is great, near Train station Rossio. The rooms were adequate, but very dated. The main problem with the room is that the HVAC is old, and only operated as one system. So if the management has it on heat, you cannot cool the room down. You can turn it off, but not to cool. Until summer. Then it is AC only, until winter. The problem is spring and fall you may need both on different days. The other disappointment was the front desk staff. The front desk is high and they tend to hide behind it, literally. We never had the greet us, or make eye contact. We even tried to greet them first, and only once (all week) got any response. At times it was almost like we were a bother. The desk staff can sometimes make the worst place seem OK. This was the main reason for the lower rating. We also didn't get the room cleaned 2 of the days. Some days we were out between 8 and 5, and they still weren't even near our rooms. This is not a big deal, and I don't need daily service, but I think reflects on the management.

Great location
You can get a better ‘value’ hotel elsewhere but the location is excellent. I was travelling with my elderly mother so chose if for convenience. It is next to a metro station (you could get the metro from the airport with 1 change but a taxi is only about €12), right next to Rossio train station (perfect for an early trip to Sintra) and a 5 min walk to tram 15E for Belém and Trams 28 and 25. There is also a small supermarket nearby. What would have been a beautiful Art Nouveau hotel is a little faded and has been somewhat modernised inside (think late 90’s early 00’s) but the rooms are very clean with a handy kitchenette (microwave, 2 electric jobs, dishwasher, basic kitchen intensive and pan and a small fridge/freezer). There is air con but it took a little while to kick in (was about 30 C when we stayed and took about a day to cool the room). The rooftop pool and bar are nice. There is a small foyer (the rest has been converted to a Mango clothes shop). There are major building works happening next door (July 2018) but we were not troubled by noise. We didn’t have much interaction with the reception staff but they spoke good English and helped us get a taxi.

Our room was a bit dated with scaffolding in front of our window. Apart from that everything was fine. Room was clean and attended to daily. Very small kitchen with fridge, microwave, toaster, hob, dishwasher but no kettle. Location was excellent, walking distance to castle, old town and riverside. Metro right outside and Rossio station a minutes walk away. Roof terrace was a definite plus, there was a small pool with about 10 sun beds and several tables and chairs. It was a welcome place to rest after a busy day sightseeing. Didn’t manage to get a sun bed at all but always tables and chairs available during our visit. The bar was also reasonably priced. Overall would definitely recommend, just for the location and rooftop terrace alone. I think we were unlucky with our room as I understand some have been refurbished.

Good base/location, but keep minimum expectations
I'd agree with the many other reviews that suggest the location is great, but the room wasn't at all appealing. On arrival on the first night, and in a tired state, my partner suggested we might want to find somewhere else to stay just based on the room itself. There was an odd smell which we think was the drains - it was like stale Chinese takeaway food smell. The room and decor was absolutely dated, however the bed was comfortable. There was plenty of space in the room. The location was great, so close to the city centre that we saved a lot of money on transport. We really liked the rooftop bar and pool, and the staff serving there. Weighing it up at the end of the trip we felt we would stay there again for the location alone, but we would be more clear on our expectations second time around. If you are looking for a base and not a lot else, it's good. For anything more exciting than that, it's probably not for you
