Bovey Castle
Very Good
Awesome but investment required.
The accommodation itself was stunning but internally tired and requiring new carpets and just some tlc. For the price we paid we expected a more quality finish.

Amazing star at Bovey Castle!
Everything was absolutely lovely!

Beautiful place but not actually that dog friendly
Amazing setting but limited options if you actually stay with a dog as it promotes it's very dog friendly but dogs aren't allowed in the bar, brasserie or restaurant and very few rooms within the house. Staff didn't seem to know where dogs were allowed and where they weren't. The menu is the same each night and day so if you're staying more than a night it becomes one dimensional as the room service menu is the same as the lunch menu and and the brasserie menu. We had to sit under the stairs and have lunch as dogs aren't allowed anywhere where there is food. We have a tiny dog who sits quietly on the floor, we liked the sound of the brasserie being like an English pub with a fire but in reality it's very much a restaurant.

Very good hotel with excellent service. Access roads are not wide so expect to spend extra travel time and care is needed to avoid scratches on your car if you meet other vehicles. Phone reception is nil.

Great place, but just too expensive at times
We stayed here for one night, when a family member was getting married on site. The wedding itself was wonderfully organised and the staff made sure it went off without too many dramas. While Bovey Castle itself is lovely and the surrounding grounds are stunning. The real downside is that it's just too expensive at times. As other reviewers have mentioned, they put a 12.5% service charge on what are already expensive prices. So a G&T that you order yourself from the bar will set you back £15.75 (£11 Gin, £3 Tonic water + 12.5% Service charge). I know this is meant to be a 5 Star establishment, but it's in rural Devon, not Central London! The room we had was very large, looked to have recently been refurbished to a good standard and came with complimentary nuts, apples, bottled water and also some Sloe Gin! But for some reason we had a bathroom designed for either someone in a wheelchair or certainly restricted mobility. Which was a shame, as the normal bathrooms have both large walk in showers and roll top baths. As to the food, it was okay but nothing special. For breakfast, there was a wide selection of Hot & Cold items available. That said, the cooked breakfast seemed unusual in that it came with Black pudding, but not baked beans. Personally I would have expected the beans to be a more popular item than Black pudding, which falls into the culinary Marmite camp of loving it or hating it. Overall, we enjoyed our stay but the cost would put us off coming back again.
