Wow was I impressed !
From registration through check out, I felt almost pampered ! When I got to the front desk to register, my hearing aide battery died and the desk clerk patiently waited while I changed the battery so that I could hear her. She offered me a complimentary bottle of water on the way up to my room. The room was spacious, the bathroom huge and everything was very clean. There were complimentary snacks and bottles of water in the room that were replenished EACH DAY !! I was there on a business trip and needed to use the phone for ease of working while on my computer at the same time. The phone was located on the table between the beds rather than at the desk but the front desk was able to have it relocated for me so that I could work with ease. The WiFi was complimentary. The roof top is spectacular with a wonderful view, pool, plenty of seating and there were also gas heaters making it more comfortable (it was unseasonably cool in San Diego for the end of February). Food was served here for breakfast, lunch and dinner making it easy to grab a bite to eat and then get back to work. The food was a bit pricey (It is California after all) but all of it was very good and I was impressed that the staff remembered me from day to day (I was there for only 3 days). I never leave reviews, so you know I was impressed ~ I would highly recommend this boutique hotel ~ Wonderful service and more quaint than larger venues.

Not so relaxing
I live in San Diego and we decided to have a staycation at the Andaz. We’re very familiar with the downtown area and we thought the Andaz would be a nice choice for a little away time from the normal weekend. I called the hotel on Friday for our check in on Saturday. I requested an early check in and noted that I completely understood if it could not be accommodated. I called on Saturday before leaving our home in La Jolla (about 25 minutes from the Andaz) to see if the room was ready so we didn’t go down early if not and was told although it wasn’t at that exact moment, that a rush was being put on the room and we were encouraged to visit the hotel and experience the property- the pool and upstairs roof top. We got to the hotel around 2:30pm and the room wasn’t ready so we took out our swimsuits and were excited to get a drink upstairs and check out the pool. The pool was filled with about 15 kids, splashing all over the place and being very loud. There was a sign with a closed off area called “baby bash” so we also didn’t have access to the whole rooftop. We were pretty disappointed- we understood the hotel is of course kid friendly however, we weren’t expecting screaming and splashing and a kids overtake on the pool. We honestly were considering going back home... We just weren’t 100% satisfied with the events that lead into our check in. Nothing about a kids bash was communicated to us and being encouraged to go early to basically go to a kids party was sub par.

Poorly Managed
This hotel has the potential to be amazing but it is so poorly run, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Of all the hotels to choose from, I chose this one for my birthday. It's pricey but it appeared to have extra amenities that would make it worth it. Unfortunately, upon arrival we were told the room was not ready. They held our bags, got my cell number and said it would be about 30 minutes and we could enjoy the pool party upstairs. We went to the roof to find loud pumping music and the pool so full of bodies it was gross. They do this every Sunday. We agreed we would not be going in the water during our stay. We tried to enjoy a drink but it was not our scene so we went back to the lobby to check on the room. Were told another 20 minutes because although the room is ready, it needs to be inspected. In the meantime people are coming in and getting rooms left and right. You are supposed to get a welcome drink but we were not offered one. I saw everyone else drinking them! After finding a manager we were let in the room. The receptionist (of all people) carried our bags and broke one of the straps. In the morning there's no coffee and one coffee cup. I thought the room was inspected?! Had to call down twice. After checking out I was told I had been given a $50 credit for my trouble and it's a shame I didn't use it. How can I use a credit I didn't even know about!??? I asked what I could use it on and they said it was too late, I had already checked out! Happy birthday to me!

One night but wouldn’t stay here again
Online this hotel looked amazing especially the rooftop pool area which was a deciding factor in finally selecting this hotel. On arrival the receptionist was friendly and was able to check us in slightly early which was great. Although disappointingly we were told that the Rooftop pool was closed to hotel guests for a private event. The room that we booked was a deluxe double room with 2 beds but still on the smallish side. The room carpet had a damp feel and smell to it and we initially thought this was because the bath does not have a solid door that separates the bath from the room just a glass door. Something to note if you like privacy showering and using the toilet. We went to use the iron which was in the closet and water was streaming from the ceiling. We called the front desk and they sent an engineer to check and if they had to move us. They moved us to another room which was great however much smaller than the room we booked where we couldn’t even open our luggage. The fact that we had to ring the front desk again for a similar room to the one we had booked was disappointing and an unnecessary hassle. They moved us again but the lady that moved us made us feel like we were putting her out by requesting the room we had booked. On a positive note the staff serving breakfast were great. Overall I would not stay here again nor would I recommend others to stay here especially for the price point. there are many other hotels to chose from.

Very good 8.0
Hip boutique
Stayed here for my wedding. The hotel staff were all wonderful, friendly and helpful. Just superior service from everyone. The hotel is hip and modern with a boutique vibe. It is only a couple blocks from gaslamp so an easy walk to resturaunts, bars, etc. The room was clean and comfortable and the shower in the middle of the room was a definitely sexy. The rooftop bar was beautiful and the drinks were great. My only complaints were the street noise and there is no hot tub. There are a lot of homeless especially in the east side of downtown and we awoke one morning to a man yelling about the police asking him to move his set up. I lived downtown for three years and the homeless are generally respectful and don’t pan handle but you do get some noise now and again. Also the morning rush hour during the week there was more traffic noise. Oh... and an extra treat or something would have been nice considering the special occasion but its not a big deal. There are complementary snacks and drinks in the room which add to the value. Overall, it’s a beautiful property, great location with amazing staff!
