Good 6.0
Checkin was horrible, but rest of stay was fine
We got there a little early and our room wasn't ready, so we went for lunch and came back at 3:30. Staff had changed in that time period and not for the better. The first guy we talked to was very nice and pleasant, but the woman didn't greet us when we walked in, with even a hello or I'll be with you guys in a minute. When she finally did get to us, our room still wasn't ready and I believe the manager went up to open up more rooms on the 4th floor. This was 30 minutes after check-in time. Also as we waited to hear about our room my husband asked if the woman at the front desk had heard anything yet and she snapped back with attitude that we would hear something when she did. It left a very bad first impression of our stay. We finally got assigned to 414. The floor looked liked it was going through remodeling, no base boards, etc. Our room was decent size, quiet, and bed was comfortable. The room was really warm when we first got there, but the a/c cooled it off by the time we went to bed. Our bathroom door didn't latch and there was a slight crack in the tv. We loved the location and the pool. Breakfast looked decent enough. I believe we dealt with Joey the rest of our time there and he was great! Maybe the woman at the front desk was having a bad day, but she did greet the mail carrier a lot better than she did us!

Very outdated hotel.
The Suites were tiny. The gym was also very small. You feel as though you were confined to one corner to workout. The pool was the size of my backyard pool. There were trees and vines to make it feel more private, so I have to give them credit for that. The "hot" breakfast was not what I envisioned. There were 3 hot selections (eggs, meat, starch). Moving onto review of the staff. If you check in around peak time -- good luck! There is only one person there. If you come in later in the evening around 11ish, you will have a hard time finding anyone. There are no bells to ring for service, so you just pace back and forth in the foyer until someone shows up. There was one particular male that worked at night who was blatantly racist and threatening. This employee was having a conversation with another male in the dining hall when my dad showed up at the front desk. My dad's room key wasn't working and he needed some assistance. He was nervously tapping the business card on the counter as he waited for someone to show up. The employee was annoyed that he did that and told my dad to "go back to your country" and threatened to call the police (Yes - for tapping/fidgeting with the card). The next day, the managers apologized and told my parents to submit a complaint to corporate. (Um thanks Sonesta ES, for not dealing with the matter at the local level??). Lastly, housekeeping was very nice, but they only spoke Spanish, so that was another hurdle to overcome.

Very good 8.0
Uptown hotel
The location in uptown was great, close to the Galleria and not far from Memorial Park with a great Greek restaurant opposite . The hotel was lovely, the room and breakfast room very clean. The pool didn't appear to get cleaned of leaves daily so there was debris floating in it. The breakfast was good and the hot buffet varied. We came into contact with a few staff, at check in the receptionist was abrupt in her tone and not as friendly as we have come to expect in America. The next day a different receptionist wasn't particularly helpful. Whilst I know they are employed as receptionists it is always good practice that they can help with basics such as how it's best to travel to downtown, bus or driving. It wouldn't take long to train staff in such basics and then they can help their guests rather than just saying they could search google - guess what do could we. At check out we asked if we could stay an extra couple of hours and we're told no but we could stay an hour, unfortunately at 12 noon our room key stopped working and the receptionist couldn't make another so had to let us back in with the master key, this was clearly an inconvenience to him by his attitude. He then phoned at 12.45 asking if we were leaving when he had agreed to extend up until 1pm. At check out it was as though the key issue and phone call hadn't happened as he was all smiles wishing us a good day. All in all I wouldn't say the staff were rude but just not very helpful or professional.

NOT pet-friendly; don't stay on the first floor.
I stayed in this hotel back in October and had a lovely experience. It was so pleasant, I called and asked if I could bring my small dog this time. The pet fee is $75 for 1-2 nights and $150 for three or more nights. (It's unclear why sanitizing a room costs more after three nights than one, but that's the policy.) Upon check in, I happily forked over the $75 for our two-night stay. After the charge had been run through my credit card, I was told that customers with pets are required stay on the first floor. I prefer upper floors, but I accepted this unwritten policy. Only two months ago, I stayed in the exact same suite on the fourth floor. But what a difference the first floor makes. Upon entering the room, I was bombarded by the smell of cigarette smoke at this allegedly smoke-free hotel. The room seemed otherwise clean until I took my first shower and discovered smeared make up and black hairs in my towel. When I took it back to the front desk, I waited about ten minutes for a clean towel--no apology for the ick factor. Unfortunately, the first floor pet "friendly" corridor is also next to a hot water heater or furnace that grumbles and crunches all night. On the other side, my room was flanked by the dumpsters which were emptied before 5 am. Finally, there was a utility closet in bedroom with NO insulation so we slept with an arctic blast coming from one corner. Needless to say, this trip was a terrible disappointment.

Poor 2.0
Breakfast selection and quality was the only plus to this hotel. Manager claims it is rated highest for cleanliness yet why was a dirty towel found in the bathroom upon entering? Not to mention the bugs found in the bathroom. Additionally, the fire alarm went off literally in the middle of the night because someone had placed something with aluminum foil in the microwave. Although understandable that guests cannot be monitored for idiotic behavior-the hotel did not apologize for the rude awakening and inconvenience. Spoke to a manager about above concerns and her solution to ‘make amends’ was a hand-written note??? Absurd! I was told I’d get a call back days ago...have yet to hear back from this manager I spoke to. I guess customer service or follow-through is not a priority for this chain.
