Great view of harbour from room. Old fashioned decor, but well kept and very clean. Good dinner and lively atmosphere in the HS1 restaurant (even for a Sunday!). Central location in the town, with view of the castle and its beautiful gardens. Free parking at rear of hotel. Lots of little shops, cafes and pubs nearby.

We had a mixed experience at the Royal. Overall it was a good place to stay, good location, clean and comfortable. The heating system in the room took a bit of working out. But it was our experiences in the two restaurants that caused our mixed review. Missing a dish and slow service at lunch and very delayed and slow service in the evening meal. After some discussion both issues were resolved to our satisfaction.
