Please note that this hotel has only a few parking spaces, if you’re travelling by car! No where near enough for the rooms. The room - the only good point was that there are plenty of plug sockets for charging devices, the cleaning was poor, thick dust on top of wardrobe and under bunk beds, we accidentally pulled out the bottom drawer on the desk to find thick dust and multiple items that had been left by previous guests over some time as they were all covered in dust! There must have been some recent painting of the wall above the bed and this had splattered onto the side of the wardrobe, on the lamp shade and headboard, the rest of the paintwork was tired, marked and scuffed. There was mound on the ceiling in the bathroom as the fan was rubbish and no bulb in the light above the mirror in the bathroom. We only had a skylight so no view at all. The free breakfast was very limited and the full English breakfast was very small. We were put in a room next to a room that was having “a bit of maintenance work done” we were told on arrival but on Monday the workmen moved in and from early morning there was hammering, power tools and sawing, we called back to the room for a rest and change before going out for the evening, to find relentless noise from the workmen next door, so no rest! The mattresses were terrible, the double bed was so soft there was complete roll together and one of the bunk bed mattresses had a spring sticking out, making it an uncomfortable sleep,

Big thumbs up to Athena. We've stayed at many of the converted townhouses along Sussex Gardens over the years, and Athena is the best of them all. The staff are wonderful, the rooms are clean and well-equipped with extra pillows and blankets, as well as lots of outlets, the showers are large, and the bathrooms include amenities such as shampoo and soap (believe me, that's unusual along the street). We were lucky enough to be put in a family room for the price of a triple, which would sleep five, even though we were only a party of three. As a result, I can't comment on the size of the standard double room. But our experience with the spacious family room at Athena would suggest that its other rooms are larger than most. The only drawback to our entire stay was that the room was on the ground floor at the front of the building. As a result, there was considerable street noise early in the morning and the curtains didn't completely block out the street lights. So I'd suggest asking for a room on a higher floor or facing away from the street. Even with those issues, though, it was immensely better than any other hotels we've tried in that neighborhood. The breakfast was typical of other such hotels - with the exception that the toast was hot and the butter soft (hooray!!). I'm not a big fan of the full English breakfast, but my family's bacon and eggs were properly cooked and plentiful. Fresh fruit would have been nice, especially when produce is plentiful and inexpensive.

I loved staying at the Athena on a six day research trip. The location (its proximity to both Paddington Station and to Lancaster Gate ) was so convenient and there are lovely shops and restaurants in the Sussex Gardens area. As a solo female traveler, I found it to be a safe neighbourhood and well-lit. The variety of other hotels and guest houses in the area meant that it was well populated even at night. The room was clean and perfectly suited for my stay and there were fresh towels and a cleanly made room every day. The wifi was fast and worked extremely well ( which was really helpful as this was a research trip) and breakfast was fantastic. I plan on staying here again next time I am in London. The staff: both at the front desk and in the restaurant were helpful and friendly and always available. I had a quiet single room away from street traffic and definitely felt I got my money's worth here. I also quite enjoyed being able to pay up front and not having to worry about the exchange rate when I arrived. As a solo female traveler, safety is a huge part of my factor in international travel and I felt completely safe here. Loved my time in London and was really happy with my hotel choice.

The hotelstaff at Athena Hotel was very friendly and helpful. The receptionist helped us book tickets for a musical. The room was a bit small and the bed the same, but allright for a 4 night stay. Had we had more nights here, we definitely would have had to upgrade the room. Because of the small room, the bed was right next to the window, where there was a big draft. This led us to set the heat higher on the radiator. So one of us was too hot and the other somewhat hot but mostly cold. On the internet we had read, before our stay here, that the cleaning of the rooms lacked a bit, but we got fresh towels every day and the bed was made every day as well. The breakfast was of cource english, which was a big difference from what we are used to back home, but we were satisfied with the granola and toast to start our day. All in all it was a pleasant stay for us at the Athena Hotel. The location is perfect for a stay in London, the area is quiet and the hotel is close to busses and underground and it's even in walking distance, if you like to walk a lot like we do.

Perfect place to stay in Central London!
I loved my stay at the Athena Hotel. I stayed 6 nights in a quadruple room (1 double bed / 2 single beds). The room configuration was great so despite having 4 adults, beds, furniture, and luggage the room did not feel cramped or crowded. I requested a fan and refrigerator in advance and was so pleased to find that both were already set up and ready when I checked in. The room lighting was bright and made the room cheerful. Open windows to allow fresh air in. And the room was stocked with everything I needed (hair dryer; coffee maker, heated bathroom floors, TV, multiple sockets to recharge my electronics - no fighting over who gets to charge their phone first, and great WIFI). The location was perfect and only steps away from Paddington stn, bus, taxi, Uber, hop-on-hop-off bus, restaurants of all kinds (pubs, Chinese, Indian McD, BKing), parks, and souvenir shops. As others have mentioned, there is some street noise that goes late into the night but that did not bother me. If you are a walker, you could easily walk to many attractions within 30mins (Kensington palace, Marble Arch). The hearty English Breakfast was a great way to start a full day of sightseeing. But the best part was the staff who were all friendly, smiling, and welcoming! If ever in London, I would love to stay here again!
