Lovely staff in lovely hotel
We stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed every minute here. Before we arrived I asked questions via email which were always answered straight away. They knew it was my wife's birthday so they dressed the room with rose petals and chocolates which was lovely (and free). We got a warm welcome on arrival and (by the way, transport via a bus to the hotel was free) also got some free drink vouchers because of my wife's birthday which was nice of them. We also got the Basel tourist card which was 50% of a few things and a free crossing on the old ferry at Munster. We went to see swan lake using the card but the theater would only accept it an hour before the show. The lobby of the hotel had free water and fruit always available and a bar. Our room was on level 4 (luckily there's a lift) and was nice and warm and bright. Our balcony faced the main road with the spalentor gate on the left. With the doors and windows closed there was no traffic noise. Room had all the usual stuff - hair dryer, safe, coffee maker (tassimo) etc. The mini bar was small and had a few beers, soft drinks, wine and snacks but very expensive so we left it alone. There's a co-op in town if you need that kind of thing. The TV was good as it had all the British channels. No normal tea or hot chocolate with the coffee machine, just Earl grey. Bathroom was compact but fine and shower good. We heard no noise from any other residents so was lovely and quiet. Wonderful stay with wonderful staff.

Weekend Stay
The hotel was well located, with parking within a five minute walk from the hotel, in a secure (as if Switzerland isn't already secure enough) car park located round the corner. The room was a great size, with plenty of storage and hanging facilities. Unfortunately, the walls were very thin, so having games played in the room above at 7 am didn't do much for the sleep, however it was a nice change to the noise from the busy road outside. The room was set at such a heat, considering no radiators were on and the air con wasn't working, the only way we were told to call the room down was to open the window, not the most pleasant as we were ground floor level and next to the busy road, walkways and what seems as though Ambulance path. The hotel was great for location and walking into town, but so are many others. Price point, it wasn't anywhere near the cheapest, yet by far not the most expensive... I did see others, during my trip around that came up in a similar price range, and will stay elsewhere on future visits. The hotel felt more hostel than hotel, but the service and greetings from the team on reception can not be faulted. Very warm, kind and professional.

Fabulous hotel in Basel
The Hotel Spalentor was the best find and the best deal ever. Don't let the small lobby fool you; the guest rooms were very spacious. Also the bed was so comfortable, the room had lots of lighting and air conditioning was able to handle a period of bright sunshine with blazing heat. Great location; either just a short walk to the west side of old town and the Rhine, or jump on the cable car right at the corner to go anywheres. It's also right across the street from the University's botanical garden which was amazing. The best part was the staff; they were all so friendly and helpful. They made sure we were aware of the services available to us as a guest such as free wi-fi in the hotel and through town, free pass for public transportation, free use of bicycles and wickelfish to hold personal items while floating down the Rhine (a highly recommended activity). Lastly, they make a refreshing Aperol spritz at their full bar, which can be enjoyed inside or out in the courtyard.

Simply a great hotel
We travel most of the summer. Never having been in Basel we had to choose a hotel that was not too expensive, had a good location but still rated highly. Spalentor is better than their rating. It gets its name from the huge gateway to the old city which sits just across the street. The hotel is modern yet classic. One of few that have air conditioning which can be necessary on those hot spells in central Europe. In their rebuild, the owners clearly designed the rooms for travelers. Rooms are light and well appointed. Shelves, drawers, closet, so a place you can truly get situated. One small thing that to us is critical - lots of outlets. Phones, laptops all need to be charged and so many hotels simply have not come to grips with this. Breakfast is on the 5th floor and while not super deluxe is more than adequate. Basel and Hotel Spalentor were so good we plan to come back for 3 or 4 more days next year. I can't give any higher praise than that.

Very good 8.0
Pleasantly surprised by Hotel Spalentor
Was very pleased with the choice of Hotel Spalentor. Stayed for one night after a river cruise ended. Check in was very smooth. Front desk rep was professional and friendly. The hotel gives you a pass to use local transportation such as busses, street cars free of charge. Location is great. Right outside old city entrance. A little bit of s walk after you enter old city entrance/wall to heart of shops and restaurants. Restaurant prices are high it seems everywhere in Basel. Room was quite large and very quiet from noises outside. Bed was comfortable on the soft side. Internet complimentary and average reception. Not the best but not horrible using FaceTime. Bathroom large and clean. Did not opt for breakfast add on since early flight. Only thing I thought odd was that there is no front desk personnel after 10:00 pm. Not sure when they get in but left at 4:30am with a code to exit front. Would be nice to have assistance during the night/early morning in case but wasn't an issue for our party of 4. If I should return to Basel I would definitely stay there again. Price was very good as well as the location and accommodations!
