Character hotel with location, location
Don’t expect large rooms with modern amenities at The Rex. It would best be described as a budget-friendly “character” property. Our room, though small had a private bath with a tiled shower, hardwood floors and was clean with a comfortable bed. There was some noise from the street and from the bar stage which was directly beneath our room (until 11), but we got used to it and weren’t in the room that much. We didn’t hear any noise from other rooms or the hallway. There’s no elevator so be prepared to climb stairs to your room. The two big pluses for us (other than being budget-friendly) was its fantastic location on Queen W with a huge variety of restaurants, attractions and public transit within easy walking distance. It’s only about a 6-block, 15-minute walk from Union Station. The second attraction for us was the great jazz bar on the main floor. We took in a couple nights of first-rate music and had a tasty dinner there one night. Cover charges were modest and reservations can be made in advance. Complimentary toast and coffee was also served in the bar each morning. All the staff from the front desk to cleaners and the servers in the bar were exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Although it wouldn’t appeal to everyone, we wouldn’t hesitate to stay at The Rex next time we’re in Toronto.
